Liam Lawson secures P3 start for Sao Paulo Grand Prix despite Q3 challenges in wet conditions

Liam Lawson will start from P3 in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, a promising position achieved despite a challenging qualifying session marred by wet conditions. The Racing Bulls driver expressed that he did not fully capitalize on his potential during the eventful qualifying, which was delayed due to heavy rainfall before drivers finally took to the sodden track.

Lawson’s impressive performance came as several front-running competitors, including George Russell and Charles Leclerc, faced grid penalties, allowing him to elevate his starting position. Despite managing to navigate the tricky conditions effectively, Lawson acknowledged that he felt there was more speed to extract from his Q3 effort. “Obviously, we’re in a good place for tomorrow, but we didn’t quite maximise it,” he stated, reflecting on his performance.

During the session, Lawson attempted to create a gap before his final lap but was hindered by traffic and worsening weather. “I caught Fernando [Alonso] in the first one, then I aborted, and then it rained. So, I didn’t really get to do that final lap,” he explained. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about his chances in the race, particularly if the rain continues. “I think we have more of a chance, probably, in the wet,” he added, while also noting the risks associated with such conditions.

Lawson’s performance comes at a crucial time as Racing Bulls has yet to announce their driver lineup for the 2027 season. His recent displays have sparked discussions about his future, with Lawson himself questioning what more he needs to do to secure his place. “At this point, honestly, every time I get in the car, I’m just trying to enjoy it,” he remarked, emphasizing his focus on the present rather than the uncertainties ahead.

In contrast, Lawson’s teammate, Arvid Lindblad, faced a disappointing qualifying session, forced to retire during Q2 due to a power unit issue. Lindblad, who had shown promise in Q1, will start from P12 after penalties are applied, a stark contrast to Lawson’s strong showing.

As the teams prepare for the race at Interlagos, the weather remains a significant factor, with forecasts suggesting more rain could impact the race dynamics. Lawson’s ability to adapt to the conditions will be crucial as he aims to secure a strong finish for Racing Bulls.
