Magnus Carlsen, five-time World Chess Champion and long-time FIDE world No. 1, withdrew from the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships after being barred from a round for wearing jeans, violating FIDE’s dress code.
Carlsen stated that he had a lunch meeting before the match and didn’t realize his attire breached the regulations. FIDE fined him $200 and gave him the chance to change, but Carlsen refused, citing principle.
“I didn’t even think about it,” Carlsen remarked. “If this is what they want to do, it’s fine by me. I’ll probably head somewhere with better weather.”
The incident highlights the ongoing tension between traditional norms in chess and the increasing visibility of the sport.
