Mark Thompson to remain CEO of CNN following Paramount Skydance acquisition

Mark Thompson will continue as CEO of CNN following the acquisition of the network’s parent company, Warner Bros Discovery, by Paramount Skydance. In a memo to staff, Thompson emphasized his commitment to maintaining CNN’s editorial independence and digital strategy as the company transitions under new ownership, which is expected to finalize on Tuesday.

Thompson, who has led CNN since 2023, reassured employees that Paramount Skydance’s leadership, headed by CEO David Ellison, recognizes the importance of news alongside entertainment. He expressed confidence that the new management would support CNN’s longstanding principles of independent journalism. “I will be leading CNN into this new chapter as it becomes one of Skydance’s suite of major media assets,” Thompson stated.

The decision to retain Thompson has alleviated concerns among CNN employees about potential leadership changes, particularly fears that Ellison might appoint Bari Weiss, currently editor in chief of CBS News, to oversee CNN. Reports indicate that Ellison had requested Thompson to remain in his role, a move welcomed by many within the organization.

Thompson’s tenure has been marked by a focus on enhancing CNN’s digital and streaming capabilities, including the launch of CNN All Access, a direct-to-consumer product set to debut in October 2025. His leadership is credited with stabilizing the network after a tumultuous period under former CEO Chris Licht.

As the merger approaches, uncertainties remain regarding the integration of CNN and CBS News. While both networks will share a parent company, they cater to different audiences and have distinct operational structures. Paramount’s chief legal officer, Makan Delrahim, noted the differences in programming and market focus between the two entities.

Concerns about potential layoffs and shifts in editorial direction have also surfaced, particularly regarding the influence of the Ellison family, which holds significant media assets. However, Ellison has dismissed fears of steering CNN towards a more conservative stance.

As part of the merger agreement, Paramount has committed to establishing a five-person news editorial independence board within 180 days of closing the deal. This board is intended to uphold guiding principles for the combined entity’s news channels, although skepticism remains among some employees about its effectiveness.

Thompson acknowledged the apprehensions surrounding the merger in his memo, stating, “I know many of you have had trepidations about this moment. That’s understandable.” He expressed optimism about the future collaboration with Paramount Skydance, highlighting the shared vision and values he perceives in the new leadership.
