Married at First Sight UK Pulled by Channel 4 Amid Rape Allegations from Contestants
The reality television series Married at First Sight UK has come under intense scrutiny following serious allegations of rape made by former contestants. This revelation emerged from a recent investigation conducted by BBC’s Panorama, prompting Channel 4 to take immediate action.
Allegations from Contestants
On Monday, it was reported that two women who participated in MAFS UK, a show where singles are matched by experts and meet for the first time at a staged wedding, claimed they were raped during the filming process. One contestant alleged that her husband raped her and subsequently threatened her with an acid attack. Another woman informed Channel 4 and production company CPL about her alleged rape before her episodes aired. Despite these claims, her episodes were still broadcast. A third participant, Shona Manderson, publicly accused her on-screen husband of a non-consensual sexual act. The men involved have denied the allegations and challenged the details provided by the women.
Channel 4’s Response
The former contestants have expressed their dissatisfaction with Channel 4, claiming that the network did not take adequate measures to protect them. Reports indicate that Channel 4 was aware of some allegations prior to the broadcast but had previously described the claims as “wholly uncorroborated and disputed.”
In light of these allegations, Channel 4 has removed all episodes of MAFS UK from its streaming and linear services, along with the show’s social media accounts. Additionally, Tui, a holiday company, announced it would pause its sponsorship of the program.
Popularity of the Series
Married at First Sight UK has gained immense popularity, akin to that of Love Island, with localized versions aired in over 35 countries. The UK edition has been running for ten seasons and often attracts viewership exceeding three million, making it one of the most prominent reality shows in Britain. The latest season has already been filmed and is expected to air later this year.
External Review Initiated
In response to the allegations, Channel 4 has commissioned an external review into contributor welfare, which began in April. A representative from Channel 4 stated that the show is produced under stringent welfare protocols, including thorough background checks, a Code of Conduct outlining behavioral standards, daily check-ins with a specialist welfare team, and access to additional support throughout the filming process. The network emphasized that the physical and psychological well-being of all contributors is of utmost importance.
The statement further noted that Channel 4 was presented with serious allegations against a small number of past contributors, which the accused individuals have denied. The channel asserted that when concerns regarding contestant welfare were raised, prompt and appropriate actions were taken based on the information available at the time.
Ongoing Investigation
The external review, conducted by law firm Clyde & Co, aims to assess the welfare protocols in place during the time the allegations were raised and to determine if any enhancements are necessary.
Priya Dogra, Channel 4’s chief executive, expressed sympathy for the contributors who have experienced distress after participating in Married at First Sight UK. She emphasized the importance of contributor welfare and stated that it would be inappropriate to comment on the serious allegations made against certain contributors, which are disputed by those accused. Dogra highlighted the network’s commitment to acting quickly and sensitively in response to the allegations.
She also noted that, as the new CEO, she felt it was essential to reevaluate how the network handled the issues raised and to consider whether changes should be implemented to further enhance contributor welfare. The review is expected to report back in the coming months.
