Meta Unveils $1,300 VR Glasses, A Lighter Alternative to Apple’s Vision Pro

Meta has officially unveiled its next-generation Meta VR Glasses, set to launch in Spring 2027 at a price of $1,300. This new device, revealed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg during the company’s Connect event, resembles oversized sunglasses and is designed to be paired with an external power and computing pod, similar to Apple’s Vision Pro. The Meta VR Glasses aim to provide a more affordable alternative to the Vision Pro, which currently retails for $3,700.

Product Features and Specifications

The Meta VR Glasses are marketed as an all-in-one entertainment and productivity device. Users can enjoy movies on large virtual screens or connect to their computers for multitasking with multiple floating windows. The glasses will launch with over 75 hand-powered games and are compatible with existing Quest VR games when paired with Touch Plus controllers.

Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, the XR2 Gen 3, the glasses feature a 5K micro-OLED display with a resolution of 2,412 by 2,288 pixels and a refresh rate of 120Hz. They include six external cameras for color passthrough and motion tracking, along with four internal eye-tracking cameras. The horizontal field of view is 70 degrees, which, while less than the Vision Pro’s 100 degrees, is still significantly higher than most display glasses. The glasses themselves weigh 100 grams (0.2 pounds), making them lighter than the Vision Pro, which weighs between 1.3 to 1.7 pounds.

Design and Usability

The Meta VR Glasses are designed for comfort and ease of use. They are not intended to be worn over prescription glasses, but custom prescription frames can be ordered. The accompanying computing puck weighs an additional 300 grams (0.6 pounds) and features 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, with a microSD card slot for additional content.

Meta’s design choices appear to draw inspiration from the Vision Pro, incorporating features such as full-color passthrough, gesture-based controls, biometric iris recognition for unlocking, and the ability to interact with friends through digital holograms. The glasses will also support a variety of 3D films and content from streaming services like Disney+ and Peacock, enhancing the viewing experience.

Market Position and Future Outlook

While the Meta VR Glasses are priced competitively compared to other devices, including the $1,050 Steam Frame, they represent a shift in the VR headset landscape. Although they may not provide the same level of immersion as some competitors, their lightweight design and user-friendly features could appeal to a broader audience. However, the glasses’ price point and Meta’s reputation may pose challenges in gaining consumer trust.

As the VR market evolves, the Meta VR Glasses are positioned to capitalize on the innovations introduced by the Vision Pro, offering a lighter, more affordable option for consumers. With the increasing interest in virtual reality and augmented reality technologies, the success of these glasses will depend on their ability to deliver a compelling user experience while addressing privacy concerns associated with wearable technology.
