Roblox has announced significant updates to its age restrictions and parental controls, responding to growing safety concerns among parents regarding the platform’s young users. A recent study highlighted that nearly half of parents have not activated parental controls, prompting Roblox to enhance its safety measures to better protect children while using the platform. According to Wired, these changes aim to provide a safer gaming environment for children aged five to 15.
New Account Types and Content Restrictions
Roblox has introduced two distinct account types: Kids accounts for users aged five to eight, and Select accounts for those aged nine to 15. Kids accounts come with the strictest defaults, allowing access only to a curated selection of games labeled as Minimal or Mild. Notably, the chat function is disabled for these accounts, reducing the risk of inappropriate interactions.
Select accounts, on the other hand, permit access to games with Moderate content and include a chat feature, although its availability varies by age and region. Both account types automatically exclude games that involve sensitive topics or social hangouts, which have been identified as potential risks for young users.
Enhanced Moderation and Safety Features
Roblox has implemented a rigorous three-part review process for games, which includes creator verification, automated screening, and an evaluation period involving age-checked users over 16. This initiative aims to ensure that games available to younger users meet safety standards. Additionally, the platform has cracked down on reward-driven games following controversies surrounding titles like “Steal An Egg,” which gained notoriety for its potentially harmful content.
Chat Functionality and Age Verification
In regions like the Middle East, the chat function remains disabled, while in other areas, access is contingent on age verification. Roblox has become the first major platform to require an age check for chat functionality, utilizing facial recognition technology or ID uploads to determine a user’s age. For users under nine, the chat feature is off by default, with parents having the option to enable it.
While the chat system does not allow for image or video sharing, it actively monitors communications for signs of grooming and reports any suspicious activity to authorities. This proactive approach aims to create a safer online environment for children, addressing parental concerns about potential risks associated with online interactions.
As Roblox continues to evolve its safety measures, these updates reflect a growing commitment to protecting young users in an increasingly complex digital landscape. The platform’s efforts to enhance parental controls and content moderation are crucial steps in fostering a secure gaming experience for children worldwide.
