Roc Nation’s Insurance Firm Seeks Ruling to Deny Coverage for CEO Desiree Perez’s Lawsuit Against Daughter
Roc Nation’s insurance provider, New York Marine and General Insurance Co., has initiated legal proceedings to assert that it is not obligated to cover CEO Desiree Perez in an ongoing lawsuit involving her daughter, Demoree Hadley. The insurer contends that the matter is strictly personal and unrelated to Perez’s professional role within the company.
Insurance Company Files Lawsuit
On April 3, New York Marine filed a lawsuit in federal court, requesting a judicial ruling to clarify its lack of responsibility in defending Perez against claims made by Hadley. The lawsuit alleges that Hadley has accused her mother of various legal infractions, which the insurance company argues fall outside the scope of Roc Nation’s commercial liability policies.
The court documents indicate that the insurance company maintains that the claims against Perez are rooted in a “contentious mother-daughter relationship” and therefore do not pertain to her duties as Roc Nation’s Chief Executive Officer. The legal representatives for New York Marine stated, “Mrs. Hadley’s claims against Mrs. Perez in the [lawsuit] are clearly not with respect to Mrs. Perez’s duties as Roc Nation’s Chief Executive Officer and are unrelated to Roc Nation’s business.”
Background of the Family Dispute
The ongoing legal battle between Perez and Hadley has been unfolding in federal court for nearly a year. In April 2025, Perez filed a lawsuit against Hadley’s husband, Javon Hadley, alleging that he had placed her daughter in a “dangerously abusive relationship” and expressed concerns for her safety.
Both parties have publicly denied any wrongdoing. A spokesperson for Perez and an attorney representing Hadley declined to comment on the matter, while New York Marine’s attorney did not respond to requests for comment.
Legal Claims and Counterclaims
In her lawsuit against her mother, Hadley has portrayed Perez as a “convicted felon” who has allegedly exploited her influence to disrupt the Hadley family. The claims include accusations of illegal surveillance, such as bugging Hadley’s room and hacking her iCloud account. Furthermore, Hadley asserts that her mother made false allegations that led to her husband being wrongfully arrested multiple times and her own wrongful commitment to a drug treatment facility.
Legal representatives for Hadley remarked, “It is difficult to imagine that a mother would do the acts listed below to her own child.” Both sides have moved to dismiss the other’s claims, but a judge has permitted certain aspects of each case to proceed, indicating that further litigation and a potential trial are forthcoming.
Insurance Policy Dispute
In the recent lawsuit, New York Marine claims that Perez invoked Roc Nation’s commercial insurance policies in October, requesting that the insurer cover her legal defense in the dispute with Hadley. The insurer responded last month, denying coverage on the grounds that Perez does not meet the definition of “insured” under the policies for claims arising from personal conduct unrelated to her role at Roc Nation.
The insurer’s letter to Perez stated, “Desiree does not meet the policies’ definition of ‘insured’ for claims or damages caused by her personal conduct related to a dispute with her daughter and son-in-law.” The letter also included a counter-offer to cover her legal defense, with the stipulation that the insurer would reserve the right to recoup any funds if it is determined that it is not liable under the policies.
Court’s Role in Determining Coverage
New York Marine is seeking a declaratory judgment from the federal court, asserting that it has no duty to defend or indemnify Perez in the ongoing litigation. The company argues, “There is no reasonable possibility of providing coverage for Mrs. Perez for the claims against her in the amended complaint.”
Hadley is also named as a defendant in New York Marine’s lawsuit. Although there is no indication that she has sought coverage from Roc Nation’s insurance company, the insurer has characterized her as “an indispensable party to this action” due to her role as the plaintiff in the underlying dispute.
