Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow Reunite for ‘Romy and Michele’ Sequel, Featuring Original Stars and New Talent
Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are set to reprise their iconic roles as Romy and Michele in a sequel to the beloved 1997 film, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. The project, produced by 20th Century Studios, has officially begun filming in Los Angeles, with Tim Federle directing. Unlike its predecessor, which was released in theaters, the sequel will stream exclusively as a Hulu Original, available to subscribers in the U.S. and on Disney+ internationally.
Production Details and Creative Team
The sequel is based on a script written by Robin Schiff, who also penned the original film. Directed by David Mirkin, the first installment followed the misadventures of Romy and Michele as they attended their 10th high school reunion, fabricating stories about their careers to impress former classmates. The new film aims to capture the same spirit while introducing a fresh cast alongside returning favorites.
In addition to Sorvino and Kudrow, the sequel will see the return of Janeane Garofalo as Heather, Alan Cumming as Sandy Frink, Camryn Manheim as Toby, and Julia Campbell as Christie. New cast members include Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham, although details about their roles remain undisclosed.
Federle, known for his work on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, is also producing the film alongside Laurence Mark, who produced the original. The executive producer team includes Barry Kemp, Sorvino, Kudrow, and Schiff, with Kimberly McCullough serving as co-producer.
Behind the Scenes
The creative team for the sequel features several notable talents. Marco Fargnoli will serve as the director of photography, while Hillary Gurtler takes on the role of production designer. Editor Brian Olds and costume designer Mona May, who previously worked on the original film and the influential Clueless, round out the team. Sarah Shepard, senior vice president at 20th Century Studios, is overseeing the project.
The original Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, produced by Touchstone Pictures and released by Disney’s Buena Vista Pictures, grossed approximately $29 million upon its release in April 1997. Over the years, it has gained a cult following, solidifying its place in pop culture. The film is currently available for streaming on Hulu.
Anticipation for the Sequel
Fans have long expressed interest in a sequel, particularly after Sorvino and Kudrow reunited at the SAG Awards in 2022.
