Sainz and Albon Approach Williams FW48 Upgrades with Caution Ahead of Baku Race

As the Formula 1 season progresses, Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon are set to test the long-awaited Williams FW48 upgrade package during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend. This upgrade, which has been in development since the start of the season, includes a revised and lighter chassis along with a new aerodynamic package aimed at addressing fundamental issues with the car.

Williams’ Upgrade Strategy

The Grove-based team has concentrated its research and development resources on this significant upgrade, hoping that the weight reduction will yield immediate lap time benefits. However, the extent of the FW48’s improvement relative to competitors like Alpine, Racing Bulls, and Audi remains uncertain, as these teams have also made strides since the Baku updates were designed.

Drivers’ Perspectives

Sainz expressed a cautious outlook, reflecting on the team’s struggles earlier in the season. “To be honest, I think probably in Madrid we hit rock bottom… we were more than three seconds off the pace,” he stated. He acknowledged that while the new upgrades are a step in the right direction, they may not be sufficient to significantly alter the team’s standing in the midfield. “I know we are not bringing one and a half seconds to Baku,” he added, emphasizing the realistic expectations for the upcoming race.

Albon echoed Sainz’s sentiments, noting the importance of the upgrades while remaining grounded about their potential impact. “They’re significant if they work, so let’s see how it goes,” he remarked. He highlighted the challenges of implementing a chassis change mid-season and the hope that the weight reduction will enhance performance. “The weight itself is obviously a big thing, and weight is a guarantee in terms of lap time,” he explained.

Looking Ahead

Despite the optimism surrounding the upgrades, both drivers recognize that the competition is fierce. Albon pointed out that while the FW48 upgrades are promising, the midfield teams are also advancing rapidly. “Even though we have a big upgrade, it’s not a magnitude that can outpace the midfield at the minute,” he said.

As the team prepares for the Baku race, the focus will be on validating the effectiveness of the upgrades and ensuring that the systems and processes are functioning correctly. Sainz reflected on last year’s performance in Baku, where he qualified second and finished third, contrasting it with the current situation. “This year I’m realistic that even with all the upgrades, we’re still going to struggle to get out of Q1,” he noted, but remained hopeful that progress is being made.
