South Asian Designers Accelerate Global Fashion Narrative at Dubai Fashion Week
Dubai Fashion Week (DFW) has emerged as a pivotal platform for showcasing the intersection of Eastern and Western fashion sensibilities. Since its inception in 2023, DFW has aimed to position Dubai as a global fashion hub, promoting international collaboration while nurturing local talent. The event recently concluded its Spring/Summer 2026 edition, featuring an array of designers that highlighted the city’s unique cultural tapestry.
A Global Stage for Emerging Talent
The event, co-founded by Dubai Design District (d3) and the Arab Fashion Council (AFC), has been instrumental in providing a neutral platform for designers. Jacob Abrain, founder and CEO of the Arab Fashion Council, emphasized that DFW serves as an umbrella for various designers and creatives. He stated that the event allows designers to express their individual themes and aesthetics, primarily focusing on the seasonal themes of spring/summer and fall/winter.
Abrain noted the importance of inclusivity, stating that the event is not solely for established designers but also aims to incubate emerging talent. He highlighted the council’s commitment to providing opportunities for all designers to shine, regardless of their brand recognition.
India Makes Its Mark
The Spring/Summer 2026 edition saw the participation of 40 designers, with a significant representation from South Asia. Notably, Mumbai-based designer Krèsha Bajaj showcased her ready-to-wear collection titled The Archive of Hidden Things. This collection was divided into three chapters—Revelation, Obsession, and Liberation—featuring soft silhouettes crafted from sheer fabrics in blush pinks and pearl tones, alongside structured corsets and dramatic trousers.
Krèsha remarked on the cultural diversity in Dubai, noting that the city is home to a multitude of cultures. Her close friend and muse, actor Samantha Prabhu, has collaborated with her on various fashion projects. Prabhu expressed pride in Krèsha’s achievements, stating that her collections blend modern and traditional elements, allowing for personal expression in fashion.
Fioletowy and the Rise of Indian Luxury
Bengaluru-based brand Fioletowy made its debut at DFW with its collection titled Elevation. This 30-piece collection, handcrafted from pure silk, featured layered panels and asymmetrical tailoring in a vibrant palette of pastels and gold. The collection reflects a commitment to artistry, sustainability, and innovative design.
Supermodel Lisa Haydon returned to Dubai after nearly a decade and served as the showstopper for Fioletowy. She commented on the ever-evolving nature of fashion, emphasizing that it is not about chasing trends but about finding pieces that resonate personally. Haydon also praised Dubai’s dynamic fashion landscape, which offers a platform for new and experimental designers.
South Asian Designers Make a Global Statement
The event also featured Malaysian designer duo Rizman Ruzaini, who presented their couture collection Rimba, inspired by the rainforests of Southeast Asia. Their collection showcased rich textures and intricate embellishments, embodying luxury at its finest. The designers expressed that their brand’s aesthetics align well with Dubai’s fashion scene, and they aspire to showcase their work in India next.
What Makes Dubai Fashion Unique
As the six-day event concluded, Jacob Abrain reflected on the distinctiveness of Dubai’s fashion landscape. He described the city as a melting pot of creativity, where a unique style is emerging that blends luxury items with streetwear and couture. He noted that there are no strict rules governing fashion in Dubai, allowing for a diverse range of styles that can be easily identified.
Dubai Fashion Week is not merely a platform for South Asian designers; it is a space where they are actively shaping the fashion narrative, contributing to a global dialogue that transcends borders.
