Spectator Issues Restraining Order Against Emma Raducanu After Dubai Incident
Restraining Order Issued Following Disturbing Behavior
Dubai authorities have confirmed that a male spectator has been issued a restraining order after exhibiting “fixated behavior” toward tennis player Emma Raducanu during her match against Karolina Muchová at the Dubai Tennis Championships. The incident, which occurred on February 20, 2025, prompted security to intervene on Raducanu’s behalf, leading to the ejection of the individual from the venue.
In an official statement, authorities noted that Raducanu chose to drop charges against the man, who had approached her, left a note, taken her photograph, and engaged in behavior that caused her distress. However, he signed a formal undertaking to maintain a distance from her and has been banned from attending future tournaments.
Distress During the Match
During the match against Muchová, Raducanu appeared visibly shaken. At one point, she approached the umpire in tears, retreating behind the official’s chair. The umpire communicated with court security, and play was briefly paused while the situation was assessed.
The incident occurred early in the match, with Raducanu falling behind 4-0. Despite this setback, she managed to recover, ultimately pushing the first set to a tiebreak, though she lost the match 7-6(6), 6-4.
Women’s Tennis Association Responds
The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) addressed the issue, revealing that the same spectator had approached Raducanu earlier in the tournament. The organization emphasized that player safety is a top priority and is working closely with Raducanu and her team to ensure her well-being.
In their statement, the WTA indicated, “This same individual was identified in the first few rows during Emma’s match and subsequently ejected. He will be banned from all WTA events pending a threat assessment.”
Ensuring Player Safety
The governing body for women’s professional tennis reiterated its commitment to collaborating with tournament organizers and security teams to create a safe environment for players. They highlighted that security measures are continuously evaluated to protect competitors effectively.
In light of the incident, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) remarked on the safety challenges that players, particularly female athletes, often face. They stated, “This incident once again highlights issues around safety that all players, but female players in particular, can face.” The LTA has communicated with Raducanu and her support team, reinforcing their commitment to ensuring robust security arrangements.
Previous Incidents
This is not the first time Raducanu has encountered such unsettling circumstances. In February 2022, a man received a five-year restraining order for persistently approaching her at her family home on multiple occasions. Such incidents underline an ongoing concern regarding the safety of athletes in high-pressure environments.
Following the match, Raducanu expressed gratitude for the support from fans, referring to the experience as “difficult.” She stated, “I’ll be okay and proud of how I came back and competed despite what happened at the start of the match.”
The focus on player safety and supportive measures is critical, especially given the high-profile nature of the sport and the challenges faced by athletes like Raducanu.
