Ahead of the opening of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, Formula 1 reflects on its memorable crossovers with the iconic Star Wars franchise. Over the years, F1 has welcomed numerous celebrities, but few have made an entrance quite like George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars. From Stormtroopers performing pit stops to Darth Vader posing alongside F1 cars, the intersection of these two worlds has produced some unforgettable moments.
The Lucas Museum, co-founded by Lucas and Mellody Hobson, is set to open its doors in Los Angeles on September 22. The museum, dedicated to visual storytelling, spans over 100,000 square feet and features more than 30 galleries. Among its inaugural exhibitions is Star Wars in Motion, showcasing vehicles, props, and costumes from the first six Star Wars films, including a look at the saga’s connections to motorsport.
2005 – Red Bull Joins the Dark Side
In 2005, Red Bull Racing made a splash at the Monaco Grand Prix, just six races into their F1 journey. The team partnered with Lucasfilm to promote Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, transforming their cars with a striking livery featuring flames and Star Wars logos. The event was further enhanced by the presence of iconic characters such as Darth Vader, Chewbacca, and R2-D2, who created some of the most amusing images in F1 history.
Red Bull’s mechanics even donned outfits inspired by Stormtroopers, adding to the spectacle against the glamorous backdrop of Monaco. However, the race did not go as planned for the team, as both cars retired without scoring points, marking a disappointing end to an otherwise entertaining weekend.
2015 – George Lucas Takes Over the Podium
After a 12-year hiatus, Lucas returned to the F1 scene at the 2015 British Grand Prix, where he was spotted among the guests. His next appearance was at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, where he played a more prominent role. Following a dominant performance by Lewis Hamilton, who led every lap and set the fastest time, Lucas conducted the post-race interviews, creating a unique moment where the F1 champion discussed his victory with the man behind the beloved Star Wars saga.
2017 – Star Wars Returns to Monaco with Renault
In 2017, both Star Wars and Renault celebrated their 40th anniversaries. The original Star Wars: A New Hope premiered in May 1977, shortly after Renault’s debut in Formula 1. To commemorate this milestone, the two brands reunited at the Monaco Grand Prix, where Stormtroopers and R2-D2 made a return to the paddock, joining Renault drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Jolyon Palmer. Lucas himself was present for the celebrations, marking another chapter in the ongoing relationship between F1 and the Star Wars universe.
While Renault’s performance on track was mixed, with Hulkenberg retiring due to a gearbox issue and Palmer finishing just outside the points, the event was a nostalgic reminder of the enduring connection between motorsport and popular culture.
