The countdown to the 2027 Sundance Film Festival in Boulder, Colorado, is officially underway, with less than six months remaining until the event. Eugene Hernandez, the festival director and head of public programming, has shared significant updates regarding the festival’s logistics, planning, and programming in a letter published on the Sundance Institute’s website.
Key Changes and Festival Dates
Hernandez confirmed that the festival will take place from January 21 to January 31, 2027, with online screenings available to the public from January 28 to January 31, and a day earlier for industry professionals and press. The move to Boulder brings expected changes to venues and accommodations, along with some unexpected enhancements, including an expanded schedule and the revival of the New Frontier program, which focuses on technology-driven projects.
A Walkable Festival Experience
One of the most notable changes is the festival’s new footprint, which will be contained within a two-mile radius. This design aims to create a more accessible and walkable experience compared to the previous sprawling layout in Park City, Utah. Hernandez highlighted the proximity of key venues on the University of Colorado Boulder campus, including the Macky Auditorium, Roe Green Theatre, and Muenzinger Auditorium. Nearby attractions include Boulder High School and the Pearl Street pedestrian mall, known for its restaurants and shops.
State-of-the-Art Venues
Preparations for the festival include significant upgrades to many venues to ensure they meet state-of-the-art standards. Hernandez emphasized the collaborative efforts with venue partners to create optimal screening environments. The Beyond Film programming slate is being rebranded to Offscreen and will include live podcast recordings.
Reviving New Frontier
The New Frontier category, which focuses on innovative films at the intersection of art and technology, is making a comeback for the 2027 festival. Hernandez noted that this revival comes at a time when discussions around artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are increasingly prevalent in Hollywood. He stated, “New Frontier will return to the 2027 edition of the festival as New Frontier FLUX to activate inside the massive fluctuations of our biodigital realities.”
Awards and Recognition
In addition to programming updates, Sundance has partnered with the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) to create a jury that will select winners for best debut narrative in the world cinema dramatic competition and best debut documentary within the world cinema documentary competition. These new awards will be presented at the festival’s closing ceremony on January 29, 2027. Furthermore, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has designated Sundance as an Academy Awards–qualifying festival for world cinema grand jury prize winners in both documentary and dramatic categories.
