Telemundo Strengthens Spanish-Language Media with World Cup and Live TV Strategy
The chairman of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, Luis Fernández, has expressed optimism about the future of television, particularly Spanish-language programming. Since rejoining NBCUniversal’s Spanish-language division two years ago, Fernández has aimed to reshape the organization amid a fragmented media landscape.
Fernández emphasized the unique role of Telemundo in Latino identity, stating that the network is currently positioned for significant growth. He noted that 2025 was a landmark year for Telemundo, and he hopes that 2026 will surpass it in terms of success.
Leveraging the FIFA World Cup
Telemundo plans to capitalize on the upcoming FIFA World Cup as part of its strategic shift towards live television. This initiative aims to make the brand synonymous with live programming, encompassing sports, entertainment events, and news through Noticias Telemundo.
Fernández highlighted that the concept of live TV is more than just a strategy; it is central to Telemundo’s identity. He mentioned that when he took on the role of chairman, discussions around live TV were already underway, leading to a rebranding of Telemundo’s messaging. The network’s new claim is that if something is live, it belongs on Telemundo.
Competing in a Fragmented Landscape
Fernández acknowledged the competitive nature of the media industry, particularly with streaming services like Netflix and Amazon. He stated that while these platforms are partners, they also represent competition. Telemundo’s core strategy focuses on live TV across various formats, including sports, news, and events. He noted that skepticism about Telemundo’s focus on live TV has shifted, with increasing recognition of its importance.
The World Cup will serve as a critical test for this strategy, featuring not only the matches but also related programming. Telemundo and Peacock hold Spanish-language rights, and plans include live events like the concert “El Mundial Es Nuestro” in Los Angeles, along with live reports from anchor Julio Vaqueiro.
Emphasizing Fandom and New Content
Telemundo aims to engage with various “fandoms” through live events and entertainment. Popular telenovelas such as El Señor de los Cielos and La Reina del Sur will continue to be central to the network’s offerings, alongside reality shows like Operación Triunfo and House of Villains. New series such as Hot Sur and Unidad de Vida are also in development.
In a notable expansion, Telemundo is entering the Christmas movie market with a Spanish-language adaptation of popular holiday films. The first project, titled La Vida Ideal, explores themes of identity and fulfillment through the lens of artificial intelligence.
Fernández believes that building fandoms that resonate culturally is essential for Telemundo’s future. Some of the network’s shows are also available on Netflix, broadening their global audience.
Content Strategy and Audience Engagement
Javier Pons, chief content officer and head of Telemundo Studios, emphasized the importance of content in connecting with audiences and advancing cultural narratives. He stated that the current slate of programming builds on established franchises while introducing new stories that reflect the evolving Latino experience. The return of Kate del Castillo in La Reina del Sur is one example of this commitment to bold storytelling.
Telemundo is adapting to the changing media landscape by utilizing its linear channels, free streaming platforms, and partnerships with services like Netflix. The network’s ownership through NBCUniversal allows it to leverage additional resources, and its prominence will be highlighted at NBCU’s upcoming upfront presentation.
Mark Marshall, NBCU’s ad sales chief, noted that Telemundo has been a competitive advantage for NBCUniversal for over two decades, reaching one of the fastest-growing audiences in America. He highlighted the network’s ability to deliver culturally relevant moments and create meaningful opportunities for brands to engage with audiences.
Commitment to Innovation and Future Growth
Fernández reiterated the importance of hard work and creativity in navigating the evolving media landscape. He acknowledged the significant changes in the industry over the past century, from newspapers to streaming services, and expressed confidence in Telemundo’s future if the organization remains committed to innovation and ambition.
