With less than a month to go until the eagerly anticipated DP World Tour Play-Offs return to the UAE for their second edition, reigning Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship winner Paul Waring was present at the official launch event, held at the stunning Louvre Abu Dhabi. The setting, a hallmark of cultural and architectural magnificence, provided an exciting backdrop for announcements and discussions that promised to elevate the upcoming events.
The inaugural Play-Offs last year witnessed astonishing successes, with course records shattered at Yas Links and unprecedented crowds at Jumeirah Golf Estates. These events not only showcased the domain of elite golfing but also placed the UAE firmly in the spotlight of the global golfing community. As we look ahead to this month, all eyes will again turn to the UAE.
The action kicks off with the 20th edition of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship from November 6-9, in which the leading 70 players on the Race to Dubai Rankings are set to compete for the coveted Falcon Trophy. Following this, the field will narrow down to the top 50 players for the season-closing DP World Tour Championship from November 13-16, where the illustrious title of Race to Dubai champion will be awarded.
Rory McIlroy as 2024 Race to Dubai Champion – Richard Heathcote
Last season, reigning Race to Dubai champion Rory McIlroy made headlines by securing a Dubai double, winning the DP World Tour Championship for an impressive third time and claiming the prestigious Harry Vardon Trophy for the sixth time, a record he shares with golfing legend Seve Ballesteros.
During the launch, Paul Waring recounted his exhilarating victory at Yas Links, remarking, “Winning the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship last season was one of the most memorable moments of my golf career.” He acknowledged the significance of the Rolex Series events, especially as he is now based in the UAE. Unfortunately, due to injury, Waring will not compete this year, but he is excited to witness the action as it unfolds.
The event also attracted dignitaries like His Excellency Aref Al Awani, General Secretary of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, General Abdullah Alhashmi, President of the Emirates Golf Federation, as well as representatives from DP World including Daniel Van Otterdijk and Richard Bunn.
In an announcement that has excited fans, Race to Dubai leader Rory McIlroy confirmed his participation in both events, aiming to move closer to Colin Montgomerie’s record of eight season-long titles. Notably, 2025 European Ryder Cup stars Ludvig Åberg, Rasmus Højgaard, Vice Captain Alex Noren, and Nicolai Højgaard, along with other renowned players such as Matt Fitzpatrick and Tyrrell Hatton, will also be in attendance, promising a significant showdown at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.
His Excellency Aref Al Awani expressed enthusiasm for the world-class golfing talent converging in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, stating, “The two events represent a platform that brings together elite golfers from around the world, showcasing the incredible growth of golf in the UAE.” He emphasized the importance of these tournaments in establishing the UAE as a global sporting destination, ensuring a unique experience for both players and fans alike.

General Abdullah Alhashmi praised the collaboration with the DP World Tour over the last three decades, reiterating pride in the achievements thus far. He expressed optimism for this year’s second staging of the Play-Offs, which promises another two weeks of top-tier golf that will highlight the UAE on the global sports stage.
From the perspective of Mohammed Al Marzooqi, Chief Executive of HSBC Bank Middle East, the DP World Tour Play-Offs represent a convergence of excellence in sports and community. “The UAE’s rise as a center of sporting and economic excellence aligns with our own growth over the past 80 years,” he stated, underlining the significance of the upcoming events in the UAE’s sporting calendar.

In addition to the riveting announcements, attendees at the launch event were treated to an innovative CGI video. This cinematic piece celebrates the UAE’s pivotal role in the Play-Offs and showcases the global reach of the DP World Tour, which features 42 tournaments across 26 countries this year. Starting in Brisbane, the video follows a giant golf ball on its journey through various destinations, culminating in the climatic excitement of the Play-Offs in the UAE.
