A Shift in Casting
This season marks a departure from the celebrity-filled cast of the Emmy-winning Peacock version, featuring everyday people instead. Rees-Jones pointed out that this format has proven successful in the U.K., allowing families to enjoy the show together. The civilian cast will embark on a whimsical journey, arriving at a castle via a steam train reminiscent of “Harry Potter,” rather than under the cover of darkness.
Despite the lighter tone, the core elements of the game remain intact. “It’s the same game — it’s Alan’s castle,” Rees-Jones affirmed, emphasizing that the audience will learn about the players alongside each other. The show also features a cameo from “Harry Potter” alumni Oliver and James Phelps, known as the Weasley brothers, adding a nostalgic touch to the premiere.
Inclusive Casting Process
The decision to feature an all-civilian cast was made by NBC, a move welcomed by the producers who have long advocated for this format. The nationwide casting call attracted 80,000 applicants, ultimately narrowing down to 22 contestants representing diverse backgrounds and experiences from across the United States. “The roundtable is the beating heart of the show,” Rees-Jones explained, highlighting the importance of varied perspectives in the game.
Host Alan Cumming, who recently earned his third consecutive hosting Emmy, selected the traitors for this season: pilot Tomica Adams and funeral director Joe Vanella. The producers remained tight-lipped about the selection criteria but expressed excitement over the potential for mischief from the duo.

The two-episode premiere sets the stage for unexpected developments, including a unique twist where the selected traitors choose a third member from the faithful contestants. This decision adds an element of suspense, as the faithful must navigate their own strategies to survive.
Rees-Jones described the filming process as a “genuine roller coaster,” teasing that viewers can expect surprising player dynamics and decisions. The budding romance between contestants Victor Vollbrechthausen and Madeline Kostopulos adds another layer of intrigue, although it was cut short after Kostopulos’s early elimination.
