TUM Wins Abu Dhabi Autonomous Race
Emphasizing Excellence in Autonomous Racing
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) has solidified its reputation as a leader in autonomous motorsport by winning the prestigious Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL). This event took place on the Yas Marina Circuit, a prominent Formula 1 track, and featured the world’s largest autonomous multi-vehicle race. Following successful qualifying rounds where TUM achieved pole position, the team triumphed against five other competitors in an exhilarating 20-lap final.
A New Era of Autonomous Racing
The A2RL is recognized as the most advanced format for autonomous racing globally. A total of eleven teams from four nations participated, putting their AI and vehicular technologies to the test. The TUM team demonstrated remarkable performance, reaching top speeds of 250 km/h. Importantly, the AI systems operated at a level comparable to that of a professional racing driver, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of autonomous technologies. Competing against last year’s winner, former Formula 1 driver Daniil Kvyat, TUM’s autonomous racer completed the race with a lap time of 59.13 seconds, only 1.6 seconds behind Kvyat’s 57.5 seconds.

“The overtaking maneuvers and the performance at the limit were the result of years of research and countless test kilometers,” stated Simon Sagmeister, Team Principal of TUM Autonomous Motorsport. He expressed pride in the team’s ability not only to keep up with human competitors but also to actively shape the future of motorsport through innovation.

Prof. Markus Lienkamp, the Head of the Chair of Automotive Engineering, highlighted that the victory illustrates significant advancements in autonomous driving technologies. “Our algorithms have not only demonstrated speed, but also strategic racing intelligence,” he noted. This achievement represents a pivotal step toward realizing the vision of safely and efficiently integrating autonomous systems into everyday transportation.
