UAE Resident of Nearly 50 Years Reflects on Dubai’s Transformative Journey and the Power of Resilience

Dubai has long been a beacon of transformation and opportunity in the UAE. Amira El Sheykh, who arrived in the country as an eight-year-old, has witnessed this evolution firsthand. Nearly five decades later, she expresses a deep connection to Dubai, stating it is the only place she considers home.

Amira’s father, an electrical engineer, was among the early professionals who contributed to the UAE’s infrastructure development. He secured a position in Abu Dhabi during a time when the electricity network was still in its infancy. Amira recalls that Abu Dhabi was characterized by a sparse network of roads, low-rise homes, and a limited number of apartment buildings. However, the city underwent rapid transformation, evolving into a modern metropolis.

Reflecting on her childhood, Amira notes that while she may not remember every detail, the swift changes left a lasting impression. Within a few years, grid roads and high-rise buildings emerged, many of which, particularly along the Corniche, remain iconic landmarks today.

After completing her education at a government school in Abu Dhabi, Amira pursued her college studies at the American University in Cairo. Despite working in Egypt for a year, her desire to return to the UAE was strong.

Amira’s connection to the UAE is further deepened by her family history. Her father worked on significant projects, including Jebel Hafeet, a site she often visits to reflect on his legacy. He passed away and is buried in Sharjah, which adds a personal layer to her ties with the land.

A Homecoming to Dubai

Amira, born to a Sudanese father and a Russian mother, holds both Egyptian and Russian citizenship. Although she has lived in various countries, she has always felt that the UAE is her true home. In 1995, when she received a job offer, she did not hesitate to relocate to Dubai, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her life.

Since then, Dubai has been the backdrop for significant milestones. Amira has built her career there, met her husband, and raised her daughter, who now works as cabin crew for Emirates. She describes her family as quintessentially “Dubai,” emphasizing the city’s role in shaping their lives.

Her late husband, Peter Beckley, initially considered moving the family abroad. However, after spending four years in Australia and South Africa, homesickness prompted their return to Dubai in 2006, coinciding with the onset of a real estate boom.

Amira’s proficiency in Russian proved advantageous as she joined a real estate firm, initially tasked with recruiting Russian-speaking salespeople for market expansion. Over the years, she advanced to the position of Senior Director before leaving the company last year.

Resilience in Times of Challenge

Amira highlights Dubai’s resilience, noting that the city has consistently emerged stronger from global challenges. She believes that this resilience fosters a similar strength in its residents. According to her, living in Dubai encourages individuals to confront challenges head-on and seek positive solutions.

Following her husband’s death, Amira found solace in Dubai’s safety, which she considers crucial for raising her daughter. The city’s secure environment allows for freedom of movement, even during emergencies.

Her daughter, Alexandra, embodies the spirit of a “Dubai kid,” having always aspired to join Emirates as cabin crew. Although Amira initially planned for her to pursue higher education in Australia, Alexandra chose to remain in Dubai after graduation, affirming her commitment to the city.

Leadership and Vision

Amira attributes Dubai’s allure to its leadership and the government’s consistent delivery on promises. She recalls the words of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who famously stated, “build and they will come.” This vision has significantly influenced the real estate sector’s growth.

The recent launch of the “Dubai-it” initiative, aimed at instilling a proactive work philosophy in future generations, resonated with Amira. She views this approach as an embodiment of action and determination.

One notable example of this initiative is the development of Dubai World Central, the city’s newest airport. With plans for five runways, it is strategically located near Jebel Ali port and connects to major transport networks, enhancing Dubai’s position as a global transit hub.

The Ongoing Journey

Despite nearly 50 years of witnessing the UAE’s transformation, Amira believes that Dubai’s story is still unfolding. She emphasizes that there is much more growth ahead and expresses a commitment to continue contributing to the city’s development.

Currently residing in The Springs with her daughter, Amira has no intention of leaving the city that has profoundly influenced her life. “We have planted our roots very deeply,” she asserts, reinforcing her dedication to Dubai.
