Ex-Wall Street Trader Launches WashWise, Achieving $10,000 in Sales in Under 36 Hours

Maria Cabral Menezes, a 27-year-old former trader at Citadel and JPMorgan, has successfully transitioned from finance to entrepreneurship with the launch of her innovative product, WashWise. The company’s flagship item, the Reset Spray, achieved $10,000 in sales within the first 36 hours of its debut in early August.

Identifying a Market Need

Menezes, who moved to the U.S. from Brazil to study at the University of Pennsylvania, identified a gap in the market while working as a trader. She often found herself with clothes that were too clean to wash but not fresh enough to wear confidently. This experience inspired her to create a product akin to “dry shampoo for clothes.”

The Reset Spray, retailing at $29, is marketed as a “dry clean in a bottle.” It aims to reduce wrinkles, cleanse, and neutralize odors in a way that is safe for both skin and fabric. The product is available in two fragrances and two sizes, including a travel option. Menezes emphasizes that the spray is designed to save consumers time, particularly those who travel frequently or engage in physical activities.

Development and Launch Strategy

The development of the Reset Spray involved extensive research and collaboration with a chemist. Menezes began formulating the product while still employed at Citadel, ultimately leading to a successful partnership with contract manufacturers. The entire process took over a year, during which she refined her concept through multiple iterations.

Prior to the launch, Menezes built anticipation by documenting the product’s development on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. This strategy fostered a sense of community among potential customers, who felt invested in the brand’s journey. By the time WashWise launched, there was already significant demand, contributing to the rapid sales success.

Future Aspirations

Menezes aims to establish WashWise as a household name, focusing on the Reset Spray before expanding the product line. She has invested between $50,000 and $70,000 of her own savings into the venture and recently raised $1.2 million from various investors. Despite not paying herself for over a year, she remains committed to reinvesting in the business to drive growth and innovation.

“Let’s do it once; let’s do it really well,” Menezes states, reflecting her strategy of perfecting one product before moving on to the next. Her approach mirrors that of successful innovators in the consumer goods space, emphasizing quality and consumer education.
