World Cup 2026 Forces Major Adjustments in North American Touring Market
In 1994, the United States hosted the men’s FIFA World Cup, attracting 3.5 million fans and setting a record for attendance. This year, the U.S. will join four other nations in hosting the World Cup for a second time, while co-host Mexico will hold the tournament for the third time.
Impact on Concert Scheduling
As the World Cup approaches, stadiums across North America will be unavailable for concerts from 20 days before the first match until the tournament concludes on July 19. Major cities such as Toronto, Mexico City, Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, New York City, and San Francisco will see their venues darkened for two months during what is typically a peak outdoor concert season.
Jbeau Lewis, a booking agent at UTA, noted that initial concerns arose when the World Cup was announced. However, he remarked that the summer has turned into one of the largest stadium tour seasons ever.
Major Artists Adjusting Their Tours
This summer, prominent artists including Bruno Mars, Karol G, Noah Kahan, Morgan Wallen, and Ed Sheeran are scheduled to perform in stadiums across North America. Kahan’s tour will utilize baseball stadiums, with performances at Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, and Citi Field. Wallen’s tour is set to hit college football stadiums, including two dates at Michigan Stadium, a venue that has hosted concerts only once before.
To navigate around the World Cup venues, some artists are either starting their tours in Europe and returning to North America later in the summer or beginning in cities that are not hosting matches. Ed Sheeran’s tour will kick off in cities like Nashville, Chicago, Denver, and Las Vegas before moving to Levi’s Stadium near San Francisco on July 25, just days after the World Cup concludes.
Strategic Planning by Promoters
Omar Al-joulani, president of touring at Live Nation, stated that the company began planning early for this year’s bookings. By collaborating closely with partners, they were able to map out venue availability and routing well in advance, thus avoiding potential conflicts. He emphasized that the World Cup has not hindered business; rather, it has set the stage for a record year in stadium tours.
While 16 stadiums are currently hosting World Cup games, artists have been aware since 2022 of which venues would be unavailable. This foresight has allowed booking agents and promoters to plan accordingly, ensuring that routing issues would not arise.
Opportunities for Nearby Venues
The scheduling conflicts caused by the World Cup have opened up opportunities for venues near host cities. For instance, Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, is set to host Shakira on July 14, coinciding with her performance during the World Cup Final halftime show at MetLife Stadium on July 19. Additionally, Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, which had not hosted a concert in 12 years, recently held a show featuring DJ Snake and Justice.
Sean Saadeh, chief programming officer at Prudential Center, highlighted the strategic planning involved in scheduling Shakira’s performance to align with the World Cup, allowing her to reach an international audience.
