Zabeel Theatre Transforms into Anime Hub for Tribute Concert
Unique Musical Experience at Dubai’s Zabeel Theatre
Dubai’s Zabeel Theatre recently hosted an enchanting anime tribute concert, featuring iconic soundtracks from popular series such as “One Piece” and “Demon Slayer.” The event captivated fans with live performances on piano and violin, showcasing the seamless blend of artistry and nostalgia in a stunning environment.
This concert was a part of the ‘Dreamlight’ concert series, which launched in 2024. Typically held in Europe, the series celebrates anime and video game music through live arrangements performed by skilled musicians, complemented by immersive visuals that engage the audience.
Musical Contributions by Talented Artists
The concert featured pianist Bertan Balli and violinist Chanelle Bednarczyk, both of whom grew up with a deep appreciation for Japanese music through anime. Their performances transported the audience into the world of their favorite shows, bridging the gap between music and vivid memories.
Balli kicked off the concert with timeless pieces from “One Piece,” “Death Note,” and “My Hero Academia.” After the intermission, Bednarczyk joined Balli on stage, delivering heartfelt renditions from “Howl’s Moving Castle,” “Detective Conan,” and “Naruto,” culminating in a standing ovation from the enthusiastic crowd.
An Immersive Anime Environment
The venue was transformed into a vibrant anime wonderland, adorned with merchandise including “One Piece” posters and a captivating statue of Monkey D. Luffy. Local vendors offered collectibles such as Funko Pops, creating an engaging atmosphere. Staff members enhanced the experience by arriving in cosplay, inviting attendees to fully embrace the theme.
In a pre-concert interview, Balli expressed his lifelong passion for anime, stating, “It felt natural to also play their soundtracks on the piano. What fascinates me most about these OSTs is their incredible stylistic diversity – from romantic, orchestral pieces to modern, rhythm-driven tracks, they cover an entire spectrum of musical expression.”
Inspirations Behind the Showcase
Bednarczyk, who entered Vienna’s University of Music and Performing Arts at just 12 years old, echoed similar sentiments. She remarked, “The soundtracks from anime movies, especially those from Studio Ghibli, have a way of transporting you to another world. Even without being a big anime expert, I feel inspired by the beauty, detail, and atmosphere of these works.”
The concept for the “Best of Anime” concert emerged from a previous performance dedicated to the soundtrack of Netflix’s “Arcane.” Bednarczyk stated, “The idea was to take anime soundtracks that touch the heart—from beloved classics to hidden gems—and bring them to the stage in a unique violin and piano format.”
Cross-Cultural Appeal of Anime Music
Balli emphasized the universal themes present in anime, which resonate with audiences across various cultures. He expressed enthusiasm about the project, saying, “Bringing anime music to the stage in a classical setting was exciting. Being part of the Dreamlight establishment felt like a natural fit.”
Having performed across Europe, both musicians were eager to share their talent with a Middle Eastern audience. Balli mentioned, “What touches me most is when people tell me how deeply the concert moved them. Audiences often leave with personal memories—that’s what makes each performance unique.”
A Special Connection with the Audience
The musicians regard the “Best of Anime” series as special because it is created by individuals who share a genuine love for anime. Balli noted, “Everyone involved in this project shares a passion for anime. Creating a meaningful connection with the audience makes it truly special, fostering an intimate atmosphere.”
This event marked Balli’s first performance in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) or Japan, and he expressed eager anticipation about meeting the local audience. In contrast, Bednarczyk had previously performed in the GCC and Japan, calling those experiences motivating and inspiring.
Aiming for Emotional Impact
Both artists hope to leave a lasting emotional impression on their audience through their music. Bednarczyk stated, “My hope is to connect with the audience on an emotional level—to share an evening that stays with them, a concert that becomes a special memory they can carry long after the last note fades.”
In response to the overwhelmingly positive feedback received during the concert, the duo expressed their intention to return to Dubai for future performances, emphasizing the profound impact such experiences have on both performers and fans alike.
