11 Top Golfers Compete in Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship
The DP World Tour season is nearing its conclusion, with only two events left in the Play-Offs that finalize the Race to Dubai. The upcoming Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship marks the first of these critical tournaments, where players have been vying for points throughout the season to secure their spots.
Final Qualifiers for the Play-Offs
The qualifiers for the Play-Offs were determined following the Genesis Championship. The top 70 players in the Race to Dubai rankings, along with two European Ryder Cup stars who were not otherwise exempt, will compete at Yas Links. All participants aim to finish in the top 50 of the rankings by the end of the tournament to advance to the final Play-Off event, the DP World Tour Championship.
Notable players who were eligible but will not compete include Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Justin Rose, and Sepp Straka, the latter of whom withdrew to care for his newborn son.
Rory McIlroy: A Season to Remember
Rory McIlroy enters the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship as the leader in the Race to Dubai rankings. After winning the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Players Championship, he completed his career Grand Slam at The Masters. McIlroy also claimed victory at the DP World Tour’s Amgen Irish Open and contributed to Team Europe’s Ryder Cup win in the U.S. for the first time since 2012.
As he approaches his seventh Race to Dubai title, McIlroy is over 400 points ahead of his closest rival, positioning him favorably for a strong performance at Yas Links.
Tommy Fleetwood: Rising Star
Tommy Fleetwood has also had an impressive season. After several near misses on the PGA Tour, he secured his first PGA Tour win at the East Lake tournament, claiming the FedEx Cup title. Fleetwood then helped Europe to victory at the Ryder Cup, accumulating the most points for his team. He recently won his ninth DP World Tour title at the DP World India Championship and currently ranks 26th in the Race to Dubai standings.
Tyrrell Hatton: Consistent Performer
Tyrrell Hatton has continued to shine since joining LIV Golf. He has added multiple titles to his resume, including his seventh and eighth DP World Tour wins. Hatton played a crucial role in Team Europe’s Ryder Cup success and begins the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship ranked third in the standings, with a chance to claim the season-long title.
Ludvig Aberg: Aiming for the Top
Ludvig Aberg, who did not qualify for the Play-Offs based on his Race to Dubai ranking, earned a spot due to his participation in the European Ryder Cup team. He has had a successful season, including a second PGA Tour win at the Genesis Invitational. Aberg aims to improve his standing after finishing T20 at the BMW PGA Championship.
Shane Lowry: Seeking Victory
Shane Lowry has had a memorable season, highlighted by his pivotal putt that secured the Ryder Cup for Europe. Despite finishing as a runner-up twice on the PGA Tour, he has yet to secure a win this season. Lowry aims to change that at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, where he hopes to capitalize on his recent form.
Matt Fitzpatrick: Returning to Form
Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2022 U.S. Open champion, has experienced a resurgence in form after a challenging start to the year. Following a split with his long-time caddie, he has recorded impressive finishes, including a T8 at the PGA Championship and a T4 at The Open. Fitzpatrick is now back in the world’s top 30 and looks to build on his momentum in the Play-Offs.
Patrick Reed: Strong Season
Patrick Reed, the 2018 Masters champion, heads into the Play-Offs with a solid season behind him. He finished third at the Augusta National Major and secured his first LIV Golf win in Dallas. Reed has also performed well on the DP World Tour, notably finishing third at the BMW PGA Championship, which secured his place in the Play-Offs.
Robert MacIntyre: Career Progression
Robert MacIntyre has made significant strides since earning a PGA Tour card. He has claimed multiple victories on the DP World Tour and recently won at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. MacIntyre also finished as a runner-up at the U.S. Open and T7 at The Open, entering the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship ranked sixth in the Race to Dubai standings.
Marco Penge: Rising Star
Marco Penge has made remarkable progress over the past year, moving from 416th in the world rankings to a career-high of 29th. He has secured three DP World Tour wins this season and is currently second in the Race to Dubai rankings, just behind McIlroy. Penge aims to solidify his position during the Play-Offs and potentially claim the Harry Vardon trophy.
Alex Noren: Career Resurgence
Alex Noren has experienced a resurgence in 2025, with strong performances on both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. He won the Betfred British Masters and the BMW PGA Championship, positioning himself for a PGA Tour card next season. Noren is back in the world’s top 20 and looks to continue his success in the final phase of the DP World Tour season.
Rasmus Hojgaard: Strong Season
Rasmus Hojgaard, alongside Viktor Hovland, has had a bittersweet experience this season. Despite being part of the winning Ryder Cup team, he did not contribute points. Hojgaard finished the previous season as runner-up to McIlroy at the DP World Tour Championship and aims for a strong start in the Play-Offs.
