George Russell has claimed a commanding victory in the Sprint at the Dutch Grand Prix, converting his pole position into a win ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris.
Russell made a strong launch at the start of the 24-lap event and, despite fluctuations in his lead, managed to maintain a solid advantage over Norris as the race progressed. Leclerc, meanwhile, fought his way past Norris on Lap 18, but Russell remained clear at the front, crossing the finish line just as rain began to fall. This victory marks the third time Russell has turned pole position into a Sprint triumph.
Race Highlights
Leclerc secured second place for Ferrari, effectively managing his soft tyres, while Norris faced pressure from Kimi Antonelli, ultimately finishing third just 0.3 seconds ahead of the championship leader. Oscar Piastri in the other McLaren finished fifth, having held off home hero Max Verstappen in the Red Bull. The remaining points-paying positions were filled by Lewis Hamilton from Ferrari and Pierre Gasly for Alpine.
Gabriel Bortoleto from Audi narrowly missed out on points in ninth, followed by Arvid Lindblad in tenth for Racing Bulls. Liam Lawson, substituting for Red Bull, finished P11, ahead of Franco Colapinto and Yuki Tsunoda. The Haas duo of Esteban Ocon and Ollie Bearman placed 14th and 15th, respectively, with Alex Albon, Lance Stroll, Fernando Alonso, and Valtteri Bottas rounding out the field.
As It Happened
The 2026 F1 season resumed at Zandvoort after the summer break, with drivers participating in an hour of practice before Sprint Qualifying. Russell took pole position, followed by Norris, Leclerc, and Piastri, while championship leader Antonelli had to settle for P5.
As the race began, Russell held the lead, while Antonelli quickly moved up to P4. The early laps saw Russell extending his lead to one second over Norris. However, as the race progressed, Leclerc began to close in on Norris, setting up a thrilling battle for second place.
With eight laps remaining, Hamilton was also closing in on Verstappen, while Leclerc was right on Norris’s tail. The decisive moment came on Lap 18 when Leclerc made a bold move to overtake Norris, leaving the reigning World Champion vulnerable to Antonelli.
Ultimately, Russell took the chequered flag, finishing 1.36 seconds ahead of Leclerc, while Antonelli could not find a way past Norris and settled for fourth. Piastri secured fifth place, with Verstappen, Hamilton, and Gasly completing the top eight.
Key Quote
“Obviously a great start to the weekend,” said Russell. “The three of us were just talking – if there was one more lap, it would’ve potentially been a very different end to the race so I was glad the rain came when it did. I had a pretty good start. The Ferraris look fast so it’s going to be a tight one this afternoon.”
