F1 drivers celebrate Dia de Muertos with special helmets and cultural tributes at Mexico City Grand Prix

The Mexico City Grand Prix has become a vibrant celebration of culture, particularly this year as it coincides with Dia de Muertos, or Day of the Dead. This significant Mexican holiday, which honors deceased loved ones, has inspired Formula 1 drivers to showcase their creativity through special helmets and cultural tributes, enriching the race weekend experience at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Dia de Muertos, celebrated at the beginning of November, is a time for families to remember those who have passed away. The festivities include decorated altars, traditional foods, and community gatherings. For Formula 1, this cultural occasion has been embraced with enthusiasm, as drivers incorporate Mexican artistry into their helmet designs and engage in various themed activities throughout the paddock.

Drivers Embrace Cultural Heritage

Special helmets have become a hallmark of the Mexico City Grand Prix, allowing drivers to pay homage to Mexican traditions. In 2024, Carlos Sainz unveiled a Dia de Muertos-inspired helmet adorned with a colorful skull motif and a chili pepper, a nod to his nickname. Sainz’s victory in that race made the helmet particularly memorable.

Other drivers, including Pierre Gasly, have also participated in this cultural expression, but few have done so as consistently as Sergio Perez. For his home race in 2022, Perez showcased a helmet featuring La Catrina, a skeletal figure synonymous with the holiday, along with papel picado, the decorative paper banners that are a staple of the celebrations.

A Colorful Paddock Transformation

The paddock itself has transformed into a vibrant display of Dia de Muertos culture. In 2016, Red Bull teammates Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo made headlines with their elaborate skull-inspired face paint, while Mercedes decorated their hospitality area to celebrate the occasion. The colorful designs reflect the calavera imagery prevalent during the holiday, which includes decorative artwork and sugar skulls.

In 2024, the paddock welcomed performers dressed as Catrinas, distributing cempasuchil flowers, the bright orange marigolds traditionally used to guide spirits back to their families. Charles Leclerc made a striking entrance in a traditional charro outfit, further enhancing the festive atmosphere.

Culinary Experiences and Traditions

Food plays a central role in Dia de Muertos, and this year, drivers had the opportunity to engage in culinary activities. Oscar Piastri participated in a guacamole-making session with a Dia de Muertos performer, highlighting the importance of food in honoring deceased relatives. Traditional offerings, or ofrendas, often include favorite dishes of the departed, alongside photographs and personal items.

Among the seasonal specialties is pan de muerto, a sweet bread prepared specifically for the holiday. This year, attendees at the Mexico City Grand Prix will have the chance to sample various regional versions of this beloved treat, showcasing the rich culinary diversity of Mexico.

Honoring the Past

One of the most poignant aspects of Dia de Muertos is the ofrenda, or altar, dedicated to deceased loved ones. For the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix, an altar de muertos will be installed in the circuit’s Blue Zone, honoring members of the motorsport community who have passed away. This addition serves as a meaningful connection between the holiday’s traditions and the history of Formula 1.

As the Grand Prix takes place on November 1, the display will remind attendees of the significance of Dia de Muertos, ensuring that the memories of those who have shaped the sport continue to be celebrated. The integration of cultural elements into the race weekend not only enhances the experience for fans but also fosters a deeper appreciation for Mexico’s rich heritage.
