Dubai’s Traffic Plan Cuts Journey Times with New Bridges and Road Upgrades

Major Improvements Ahead for Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has initiated an important contract aimed at enhancing the intersection of Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street with Al Awir Road and Al Manama Street. This project is part of a broader strategy to improve traffic flow and accommodate urban growth within the emirate.

The infrastructure development will include the construction of 2.3 kilometers of bridges, broader lanes, revamped service roads, and newly established access points for residential and commercial areas along Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street and Al Awir Road. These enhancements are designed to facilitate smoother traffic movement in both directions.

Expected completion of the project is set for the third quarter of 2028, with a significant increase in traffic capacity anticipated. The improvements will allow for a rise in vehicular capacity from 5,200 vehicles per hour to 14,400 vehicles per hour, marking a 176% increase in efficiency. Furthermore, travel time along this corridor is projected to decrease dramatically from 20 minutes to just five minutes.

Transformative Changes at the Intersection

The redesign of the intersection will involve converting the existing roundabout into a grade-separated interchange, promoting uninterrupted traffic flow in all directions. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, emphasized the project’s role in the RTA’s master plan. “This initiative is critical to developing the extensive network of roads, bridges, crossings, and tunnels that cater to increasing traffic volumes and enhance connectivity across Dubai,” he stated.

This project will serve an impressive combined population of over 600,000 residents and visitors, addressing the demands of urban expansion and increasing mobility needs. Plans also envisage the addition of main bridges on Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street with four lanes in each direction. Ramps for both right- and left-turn movements will be constructed for enhanced traffic flow.

Further Infrastructure Upgrades at Al Manama Street

In addition to upgrades at the Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street intersection, there will be significant improvements to Al Manama Street. This segment will undergo enhancements to widen the street from two to four lanes in each direction, thereby boosting its operational capacity.

The plan also includes the installation of signalized intersections to improve operational efficiency. “These upgrades will provide safe access points for the surrounding development areas,” a project spokesperson confirmed, highlighting the community-oriented focus of the improvements.

Comprehensive Road Network Development

These enhancements are part of a larger program of road upgrades initiated by the RTA, which commenced with the extension of Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street. This extension features a four-lane road in each direction across a 25-kilometer stretch, linking it from its intersection with Dubai–Al Ain Road to the roundabout on Al Yalayis Street.

Complementary to these developments, several nearby intersections have already been upgraded. Noteworthy among them is a grade-separated interchange created at the junction of Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street and Latifa bint Hamdan Street, positioned near the entrance to Global Village for traffic coming from Emirates Road.

Other improvements include a newly constructed signalized roundabout at the intersection with Al Qudra Street, and a signalized surface intersection at Hessa Street. These adaptations serve as interim traffic solutions, ensuring a smoother transition until further enhancements are executed.

Enhancements in Dubai Silicon Oasis

The comprehensive road improvement project also encompasses upgrades along the stretch from Dubai–Al Ain Road to the Academic City roundabout, covering an area of approximately three kilometers. This phase involves the construction of two bridges at the Dubai Silicon Oasis intersection, each measuring 120 meters in length, also featuring four lanes in each direction.

A signalized surface intersection below these bridges adds to the infrastructure, accommodating an impressive total of 20 lanes in all directions, facilitating a capacity of 8,000 vehicles per hour. These developments aim to ensure efficient traffic flow towards key areas like Dubai Silicon Oasis and Zayed University, while also enhancing mobility at the Academic City roundabout.
