Shakira Thrills 2 Million Fans With Free Concert at Copacabana Beach
Shakira captivated an audience of 2 million fans during a free concert at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night, May 2. The event, which drew massive crowds to one of the world’s most iconic waterfronts, was hailed by the city’s mayor as a historic occasion.
A Night of Celebration
The concert was part of Shakira’s “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” world tour, named after her 2024 album. This performance followed similar high-profile shows by Madonna in 2024 and Lady Gaga last year, both of which also attracted large audiences.
Shakira’s set began at approximately 11 p.m., over an hour later than scheduled. Fans erupted in cheers as drones flew overhead, displaying the message “I love you Brazil” in Portuguese.
Reflecting on Her Journey
During the concert, Shakira reminisced about her first visit to Brazil nearly three decades ago. She expressed her dreams of performing for the Brazilian audience, stating, “I arrived here when I was 18 years old, dreaming about singing for you. And now look at this. Life is magical.”
The Colombian superstar performed several of her hit songs, including “Hips Don’t Lie,” “La Tortura,” and “La Bicicleta.” She concluded her set with “BZRP Music Sessions #53/66,” a track that followed her separation from Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué. Throughout the performance, she emphasized the resilience of women, stating, “Us women, every time we fall we get up a little wiser.”
Attendance and Impact
Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere announced via social media that the concert attracted 2 million attendees, declaring, “The She-Wolf made history in Rio,” referencing Shakira’s 2009 hit.
Felipe Maia, an ethnomusicologist at Paris Nanterre University, noted that Shakira’s longstanding connection with Brazil stems from cultural similarities between Colombia and Brazil. He remarked that Saturday’s concert further solidified her relationship with the Brazilian public.
Erica Monteiro, a 38-year-old accountant, shared her admiration for Shakira, stating, “For me she represents the strength of our Latino community. We’re treated as if we were inferior but in fact we have much more strength.”
Cultural Significance
Hellem Souza da Silva, attending the concert, remarked that Shakira’s performance, alongside Bad Bunny’s concerts in São Paulo earlier this year, has helped to reinforce Brazil’s Latino identity. She emphasized that these artists highlight the unity of Latin American countries, asserting that “America is not the United States.”
Crowds began gathering at Copacabana Beach early Saturday morning to secure prime viewing spots. Street vendors offered a variety of snacks, drinks, and even essentials like toilet paper and deodorant, catering to the needs of concertgoers.
Simone Paula da Cunha, a street vendor, arrived on the beach the night before, hoping to sell beverages and make a profit. Despite her exhaustion, she expressed excitement about witnessing Shakira live, recalling her admiration for the artist since her early career.
Economic Boost
The free concert is part of the city’s initiative to stimulate economic activity following Carnival and New Year’s celebrations, leading up to the month-long Saint John’s Day festivities in June. Mayor Cavaliere stated, “For us, parties are serious business. Because parties generate jobs, income, development, and identity for the city.” He projected that the investment in the concert would yield a financial return 40 times greater.
According to a study by City Hall and Riotur, the municipality’s tourism company, Shakira’s performance could generate approximately 777 million reais (around $155 million) through increased tourism and spending in local businesses.
Data from City Hall indicates that tourist numbers in Rio during May have increased significantly in years with concerts, with a 34.2% rise in 2024 compared to the previous year and a 90.5% increase in 2025.
Ahead of the concert, Airbnb reported a surge in bookings from guests traveling from various parts of Brazil, Latin America, and even European cities like Paris and London.
Wanderson Andrade, a 30-year-old architect, flew in from Goiânia specifically for the concert. He expressed his excitement, stating, “I tried to get tickets to see her in Brazil last year but I didn’t succeed. Today is a dream come true.”
