NFL Standout Ray Davis’ Foster Care Journey Accelerates to Film with ‘Reacher’ Director
Buffalo Bills running back and kick returner Ray Davis is set to have his inspiring journey through the foster care system adapted into a feature film titled Breakaway Ray. The project is currently in development by Crossroad Productions, with Gary Fleder, known for his work on Runaway Jury and The Express, attached as the director. The screenplay is penned by W. Peter Iliff, recognized for his contributions to Point Break and Varsity Blues. The film is being financed by Blue Fox Financing and has garnered support from the Buffalo Bills and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
Focus on Early Life
Breakaway Ray will explore the formative years of Davis, who recently earned a spot in the NFL’s Pro Bowl. The narrative centers on a nine-year-old Davis living in San Francisco, grappling with poverty due to his mother’s struggles with addiction and the absence of his incarcerated father. His life takes a turn when he discovers a poster for Big Brothers Big Sisters, leading him to reach out for mentorship. He is paired with Patrick, a young Google employee, who becomes a pivotal figure in his life as they navigate the complexities of family dynamics.
Casting and Production Timeline
Casting is currently underway to find a young actor to portray Davis, who was selected by the Bills in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft from the University of Kentucky. Production for Breakaway Ray is anticipated to commence in February 2027 in Davis’ hometown of San Francisco. The film has secured the California Film Tax Credit and the Scene in San Francisco incentive program, facilitating its production. Patrick Rizzotti, known for his work on Pride and The Collector, is producing the film alongside co-producer Lanie Albin.
Buffalo Bills’ Resurgence
The Buffalo Bills have experienced a significant transformation over the years, moving past a challenging period that included four consecutive Super Bowl losses in the 1990s. This renaissance began with the drafting of quarterback Josh Allen in 2018. Since then, the team has gained prominence, featuring in HBO’s Hard Knocks and having a documentary in development about defensive player Damar Hamlin and his recovery from a cardiac arrest incident on the field.
The Importance of Mentorship
Adam Vasallo, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, highlighted the transformative power of mentorship, stating that Ray’s story exemplifies how young people can aspire to greater heights when given the opportunity. Rizzotti echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the project underscores the universal need for connection and hope.
Davis expressed his pride in being able to support young people in foster care, noting that football provided him with a purpose. He stated that if his story can help even one child feel seen or inspire a mentor to step forward, then his experiences have been worthwhile.
Insights from the Creative Team
Iliff shared that his interactions with Davis, his father, and his mentor Patrick ignited a profound passion in his writing. He remarked on the resilience displayed by young Ray, serving as a reminder that anything is possible. Fleder emphasized that the film will not present a sanitized version of a sports legend, but rather capture the raw realities Davis faced alongside the quiet strength of mentorship.
Derek Boyko, Vice President of Communications for the Buffalo Bills, remarked that the project transcends mere entertainment, serving as a beacon of hope for children facing similar adversities. The film aims to shed light on the more than 300,000 children currently in the U.S. foster care system and highlight the significance of mentorship programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters, which has collaborated with the NFL since 2019.
Commitment to Authenticity
Manijeh Fata, Executive Director of Film SF for the San Francisco Film Commission, expressed excitement about the production’s commitment to authenticity and its choice to film in San Francisco. She noted the honor of supporting a project that emphasizes resilience and mentorship, reflecting the spirit of a city known for its strength and hope.
Davis is represented by Ed Barry of CAA, while Iliff and Fleder are represented by David Saunders of AIG.
