Angela Kelly’s Playful Prank on the Queen: “You’re Sacked!”

Angela Kelly, the late Queen’s personal dresser, shared a humorous anecdote from a royal tour in Australia that highlights her playful relationship with Her Majesty. During the 2006 visit, Kelly decided to have a bit of fun at the Queen’s expense before presenting her with a thoughtful gift.

A Gift with a Twist

The centenary of the late Queen’s birth is currently being celebrated with a major exhibition showcasing her iconic wardrobe. Among the highlights are designs by Angela Kelly, who was not only the Queen’s personal dresser but also a close confidante. The two shared countless moments, often discussing family and enjoying light-hearted banter over tea.

In her book, The Other Side of the Coin, Kelly recounted the story of how the Queen was eager to see a kookaburra during their time in Australia. Despite her efforts, the Queen was unable to spot one. Kelly, however, found a plush toy version at a market and decided to turn the moment into a playful prank.

The Prank Unfolds

Upon returning to their accommodations at Governor’s House, Kelly placed the toy in a small cage on the balcony. She then informed the Queen that she had spotted a “funny-looking grey bird” outside. The Queen, excited, rushed to the window and exclaimed, “It’s a kookaburra!”

As Kelly pretended to open the cage, the Queen warned her not to let it fly away. Maintaining a straight face, Kelly solemnly informed Her Majesty that the toy was, in fact, dead. The Queen’s expression turned to one of horror until Kelly revealed the joke with an “April Fool!”

The Queen’s Response

The Queen’s reaction was swift and humorous. She reportedly responded with just two words: “You’re sacked.” Laughter ensued as she turned to Prince Philip, exclaiming, “Do you know what she has just done to me? Angela has had me!”

After the prank, the Queen took the toy back to Windsor Castle, where it found a place on the back of her sofa in her private living room.

Life After the Monarchy

Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, Kelly faced significant changes in her life. She lost her grace-and-favour home on the Windsor estate and announced her move to a new residence in the Peak District, close to Sheffield, in a house provided by the King. On social media, she expressed her sentiments about leaving her previous home, stating, “Getting ready to say goodbye. I am moving at last to my new home which I will be able to call My Home at last.”

Recently, six of Kelly’s outfits designed for the late Queen were featured in an exhibition at Buckingham Palace titled Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style. Despite this recognition, Kelly has had limited contact with the Palace since her departure.

Cherished Memories

As the centenary of the late Queen’s birth approaches, Kelly reflected on her fond memories of dancing and singing along to ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” in the Queen’s presence. She recalled how the Queen enjoyed listening to the Terry Wogan show on Radio 2, and when the song played, both would dance together.

Kelly described the Queen as someone who loved to sing and had a good voice, while she herself was less musically inclined. Their playful interactions often involved laughter and joy, showcasing a relaxed side of the Queen.

Additionally, Kelly reminisced about spending Easter holidays with the royal family at Windsor. She noted how the Queen cherished her role as a grandmother, engaging in activities with her great-grandchildren and even washing dishes after family barbecues.

The late Queen’s ability to maintain a normal family atmosphere, even amid royal duties, left a lasting impression on Kelly. She described the Queen as “full of energy and a really cool granny.”
