Anushka Chhabria, a promising young talent in junior pickleball, made headlines at India’s inaugural Junior Pickleball Championship held in Ahmedabad. The Mumbai-based athlete showcased her skills by winning two gold medals, a silver, and a bronze, solidifying her status as a standout performer in the tournament.
Championship Highlights
Chhabria’s remarkable achievements included clinching the U16 Girls Doubles title alongside partner Mahika Rathod and the U16 Mixed Doubles crown with Panth Thakkar. Her performance not only highlighted her individual talent but also underscored the importance of teamwork in achieving success in competitive sports.
Reflecting on her experience, Chhabria expressed the significance of her victories. She noted that the competition featured talented junior players from across the country, making the journey to her medals especially rewarding. “None of the medals came easy. There were tough matches throughout the tournament, but it was also a lot of fun,” she stated.
The Chemistry Behind Two Gold Medals
Winning titles at a national level is no small feat, and Chhabria emphasized the role of partnership in her success. She attributed her victories in both the U16 Girls Doubles and U16 Mixed Doubles events to the chemistry she shared with her partners.
Her collaboration with Rathod was particularly effective, as they won every match together. “We played very consistently, had a clear strategy, and managed to execute it in every match. Our goal was simply to enjoy ourselves and play our best pickleball,” she remarked.
In mixed doubles, her partnership with Thakkar also proved fruitful. Chhabria noted that their shared focus on enjoyment and teamwork contributed significantly to their success. “When we lost a few points, we reminded ourselves that every point is a new point,” she added, highlighting their resilience during challenging moments.
A Landmark Event for Indian Pickleball
The championship marked a significant milestone for the sport in India, bringing together junior players from various regions and showcasing the growing talent pool in pickleball. Chhabria described the event as special, noting the diverse range of players and the excitement it generated. “It was wonderful to see more people taking up pickleball and competing,” she said.
The tournament featured several matches decided on Golden Point, adding an extra layer of intensity to the competition. Chhabria’s experience at the championship extended beyond her medal haul; it served as a platform for her to witness the sport’s rapid expansion in India.
Balancing Academics and Athletics
Outside of her athletic pursuits, Chhabria is a Class 10 student managing multiple commitments. She balances her academic responsibilities with tuitions, coaching sessions, and fitness training. Additionally, she is a musician, playing the piano, guitar, and ukulele while also singing.
Chhabria credits her parents for their unwavering support, which has been crucial in helping her manage her various responsibilities. “I love the sport and my parents are a huge help. They support me and help me balance everything,” she stated.
Inspiring Future Generations
As junior pickleball continues to gain traction in India, Chhabria hopes to inspire more young players, particularly girls, to take up the sport. She believes that pickleball is not only enjoyable but also offers significant potential for growth. “Honestly, I would encourage everyone to give pickleball a try. Once you start playing, it’s difficult to stop because it’s so addictive,” she remarked.
Chhabria emphasized the valuable lessons that the sport teaches, both on and off the court, reinforcing her belief in the importance of perseverance and teamwork.
A Year of Consistency and Growth
Chhabria’s success at the Junior Pickleball Championship is part of a broader narrative of achievement throughout the 2026 season. She has established herself as one of India’s leading junior players, receiving recognition for her outstanding performances.
In March 2026, she was honored by the Cricket Club of India (CCI) for her accomplishments at the international level during the 2025-26 season. At the Indian Open in Hyderabad in April, she secured gold medals in both the Under-16 Girls Singles and Under-16 Girls Doubles categories, along with a bronze in Mixed Doubles.
Following this, she continued her impressive run at the Maharashtra Open in Mumbai in May, winning gold in the Under-16 Girls Singles and Under-16 Mixed Doubles events, as well as a bronze in the Women’s Singles Intermediate category. These achievements have propelled her to the top of the PWR Rankings in the Under-16 Girls Singles category, where she currently holds the No. 1 national ranking.
