Disney announced plans to replace the popular yet controversial Splash Mountain ride. With a history rooted in the racially insensitive 1946 movie “Song of the South,” the decision to close Splash Mountain garnered mixed reactions. While some praised the overdue change, others mourned the loss, with over 100,000 fans petitioning against it.
Now, Disney introduces Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, a ride based on the 2009 animated musical “The Princess and the Frog,” featuring Disney’s first Black princess. Opening on June 28 at Disney World, with Disneyland following later in the year, this marks a significant milestone for Disney, investing an estimated $150 million in the project.
A New Beginning with Tiana
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure retains the ride structure of Splash Mountain but offers a new narrative. Gone is the suspenseful story of Brer Rabbit; in its place is a joyful Mardi Gras party led by Tiana and her friend Louis, a trumpet-playing alligator. The ride celebrates New Orleans’ rich cultural heritage, featuring music genres like jazz, zydeco, and blues, and incorporates diverse decorative elements, including Spanish and French influences.
Inclusive and Diverse
The ride’s creative director, Ted Robledo, emphasised the importance of inclusivity, pointing out features like a Choctaw stickball racket, symbolising the region’s Indigenous history. “We’re always looking at ways to cast a wider net,” Robledo said, highlighting the new attraction’s relevance compared to its predecessor.
Mixed Reactions and High Hopes
Despite some criticism, particularly from Splash Mountain enthusiasts, initial reactions from those who experienced the ride have been overwhelmingly positive. Social media influencer Victoria Wade praised the ride for its continuation of Tiana’s story and its impressive animatronics. Disney “super fan” Drew Smith also expressed his approval, urging sceptics to give the new attraction a chance.
Expanding Tiana’s Universe
The launch of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is part of a broader strategy to expand Tiana’s presence. An animated series on Disney+ will continue the story, and merchandise tied to the ride is expected to perform well, supported by dedicated gift shops at the ride’s exit.
A Historic Move for Disney
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure represents Disney’s commitment to evolving and embracing diversity. As Disney’s theme park chairman Josh D’Amaro stated, “Our parks are treasured, and our fans care deeply about how they evolve and change — just as we do.” With this new ride, Disney aims to honour that promise, delivering an experience that resonates with a broader audience while celebrating the legacy of a beloved character.
