Dubai Film Festival Founders Strengthen Cultural Ties: “We Started With the Idea to Bridge East and West”
The inaugural Arab Cinema Personalities of the Year Award, presented in collaboration with the Arab Cinema Center, recognizes two pivotal figures behind the Middle East’s cinematic success. Since its inception in 2004, the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) has emerged as a cornerstone of the regional film landscape, attracting international filmmakers to the United Arab Emirates while fostering a nurturing environment for Arab talent.
A Platform for Arab Talent
The Dubai International Film Festival has become synonymous with the growth of Arab cinema. It has not only showcased international films but has also provided a vital platform for local filmmakers to launch their careers. Notable figures such as Hany Abu-Assad, a twice Oscar-nominated Palestinian director, have opened the festival on two occasions. His film Omar, which debuted in 2013, received support from DIFF’s postproduction fund. Similarly, Saudi director Haifaa Al-Mansour began her journey at DIFF with her acclaimed 2012 debut, Wadjda. The festival has also attracted major Hollywood stars, including Tom Cruise, who premiered Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol at DIFF in 2011, famously performing stunts on the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.
Resilience Amid Challenges
While other regional film festivals have come and gone, DIFF has navigated various challenges and emerged more influential than ever, largely due to the establishment of its film market in 2007. Abdulhamid Juma, the chairman of DIFF, and Masoud Amralla Al Ali, the artistic director, have been instrumental in this journey. Al Ali, often referred to as the “godfather of Emirati film,” previously launched the Emirates Film Competition in 2001, laying the groundwork for the current festival.
The founders attribute the festival’s longevity to their commitment to bridging cultural divides. Juma emphasized that the festival was conceived as a means to reshape perceptions of the Arab world, especially in the aftermath of the events of 9/11. He noted the desire to create a hub for young storytellers from the region, allowing them to share their narratives with both local and global audiences.
Evolution of the Arab Film Industry
The Arab film industry has undergone significant transformation since DIFF’s establishment. Al Ali remarked on the shift from traditional film screening to digital formats, which has greatly increased the volume of submissions. The festival now reviews nearly 900 submissions to select 15 short Arab films, reflecting a burgeoning pool of talent. He noted that the influx of new filmmakers has shifted the balance, with emerging voices now outnumbering established names.
Despite the challenges posed by economic downturns and competition from other festivals, Juma expressed confidence in DIFF’s resilience. He highlighted that the festival has not only survived but thrived, overcoming obstacles that could have derailed its progress. The founders remain committed to evolving the festival to ensure its relevance in an ever-changing landscape.
Future Directions for DIFF
Looking ahead, Juma emphasized the importance of leveraging DIFF’s strengths while exploring new avenues for growth. He acknowledged that stagnation could lead to decline, and the festival must continuously innovate to keep audiences engaged. The founders are determined to maintain DIFF’s status as a premier destination for filmmakers and audiences alike.
Reflecting on personal highlights, Juma recalled the year Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol premiered, marking a significant milestone for the festival. Al Ali shared a poignant moment when the IWC Schaffhausen Award was presented for the first time, recognizing a feature-length film project from the Gulf. The presence of industry luminaries like Cate Blanchett underscored the festival’s growing stature.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the Dubai International Film Festival continues to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Arab cinema, fostering cultural exchange, and nurturing the next generation of filmmakers.
