Dune Casting Call Announced in Abu Dhabi
Major Film Production Looking for Talent
A prominent casting agency in the UAE has issued a call for actors for roles in an anticipated Hollywood blockbuster being filmed in Liwa, Abu Dhabi. Miranda Davidson Studios, known for casting extras in major films shot in the region, is seeking babies, children, teenagers, and adult women for various roles. Although the specific film has not been officially disclosed, indications strongly point towards the upcoming Dune: Part Three, which has been confirmed to commence filming in the UAE capital.
The Return of Dune to Abu Dhabi
The Abu Dhabi Film Commission announced in August that the sweeping Liwa Desert will feature prominently in the next installment of the Dune saga. “The sweeping dunes of Liwa Desert return to the big screen as filming begins in Abu Dhabi later this year for the next chapter in the Dune saga,” the commission stated. Sameer Al Jaberi, head of the commission, emphasized that the return of Dune to Abu Dhabi highlights the advantages of world-class production support available in the region.
Both Dune and its sequel, Dune: Part Two, achieved significant box office success and utilized Abu Dhabi’s dramatic landscapes as the setting for the fictional planet of Arrakis. Fans can expect the return of major stars including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin, all reprising their roles in Dune: Part Three. Additionally, franchise newcomer Robert Pattinson is set to join the cast.
Timeline for Casting and Filming
Although concrete shooting dates remain unconfirmed, the casting agency has indicated that applicants should be available for filming between October and November. The most recent casting call specifically requested a girl aged 3 to 5 years with brown skin and curly hair for a minor role in the film. The selected child actor will serve as a double for the main child character, with availability required for 15 days from October 29 to November 12 in Liwa and Al Ain.
The payment structure for this role includes Dh500 for the filming days and an additional Dh200 for fittings, totaling a maximum of six hours each day, including breaks.
Miranda Davidson Studios has also sought children aged 4 to 5 years and 12 to 13 years who can resemble twins, sharing similar skin tones and hair. Additionally, the agency is looking for babies under two months old for the film project being shot in the region.
Seeking Diverse Talent
In a separate casting initiative, the agency previously announced the need for “slender and athletic” women with dark brown to black wavy or curly hair and an olive or tanned complexion. Such descriptions align closely with characteristics attributed to the Fremen, a tribe depicted in the Dune series, known for their incredible survival skills in the harsh desert environment. Frank Herbert, the author of the Dune novels, based the Fremen on traditional Bedouin cultures.
Prominent cast members including Zendaya and Bardem have portrayed Fremen characters in previous films, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in casting.
Support and Production Partners
For Dune: Part Three, logistical support will be provided by the Creative Media Authority and the Abu Dhabi Film Commission, with Image Nation acting as a production partner. The first film in the series, released in 2021, saw a limited shooting schedule of just five days in the emirate, compared to nearly a month for the sequel. This increase underscores the growing commitment to film production in Abu Dhabi.
Director Denis Villeneuve expressed that Abu Dhabi offers unique advantages, stating, “What I found in Abu Dhabi is unmatchable. There’s a scale to the dunes and the desert in a variety of shapes that we thought was absolutely mesmerizing.” He also acknowledged the climatic conditions that complement the film’s aesthetic.
Anticipation Builds in the Arts and Culture Community
The forthcoming filming in Liwa is generating excitement within the local arts and culture sector. As production teams prepare to unveil more details, the community eagerly awaits the sights of the captivating Abu Dhabi landscape on the big screen.
The efforts from the casting agency highlight not only the opportunities available for local talent but also the significant role Abu Dhabi plays in the international film landscape. As the project unfolds, it promises to cement the emirate’s place as a center for cinematic excellence in the region.
