Lee Commits to Strengthen Energy, Defense, and AI Ties with UAE
President Lee’s Vision for Economic Collaboration
ABU DHABI — President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea has pledged to enhance economic cooperation with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) focusing on vital sectors like the defense industry, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence (AI). This commitment came during a business roundtable held in Abu Dhabi as part of his state visit dedicated to fostering stronger economic ties with the Middle Eastern nation.
During the meeting with business leaders from both nations, Lee emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation beyond traditional sectors, including nuclear energy and defense. He articulated a vision to integrate emerging industries, noting that collaboration in these areas could serve as significant growth drivers for both countries.
Focus on Renewable Energy and AI Development
In his address, President Lee encouraged leveraging the UAE’s extensive solar energy resources combined with South Korea’s advanced battery technology. “Let us secure momentum for shared growth by advancing cooperation in clean energy and the defense industry,” he remarked. This joint effort aims to support both nations’ objectives to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and innovate new eco-friendly industries.
Lee also articulated South Korea’s intention to assist the UAE in its nuclear energy ventures. Plans include building infrastructure for nuclear fuel and associated electricity production facilities, thereby reinforcing collaborative efforts in sustainable energy solutions.
Expanding Defense Cooperation
Shifting focus to defense, Lee highlighted the need to broaden collaboration beyond simple weapons procurement. He suggested enhancing joint development initiatives and technology sharing compounds, which could contribute significantly to the advancement of both nations’ defense industries.
“We hope to enhance cooperation from joint development and technology sharing to local production,” stated Lee. He expressed aspirations for cooperative efforts to extend into third-country markets, thus broadening bilateral relations on a global scale.
AI and Technology Partnerships
Highlighting South Korea’s expertise in semiconductor manufacturing, Lee positioned the country as “the UAE’s most reliable partner” in realizing its ambitions to become a global center for AI innovation by 2031. He indicated that strong technical collaborations in AI would play a crucial role in this transformation.
Furthermore, Lee pointed to the importance of enhancing cultural and knowledge exchanges between the two nations in sectors such as food and beauty. He expressed hopes that strengthened ties would facilitate the dissemination of Korean culture across the broader Middle Eastern region.
Key Agreements and Collaborative Efforts
The business roundtable witnessed the signing of five memorandums of understanding (MOUs) across various sectors including soft power, defense, and energy. Major South Korean corporations participated in the discussions, aiming to solidify their positions in the UAE market.
For instance, significant agreements included collaborations between Korean retail giant CJ and UAE’s leading beauty retailers aimed at optimizing distribution strategies for food and beauty products throughout the Middle East. In the defense sector, LIG Nex1 has initiated a partnership with Calidus to develop an integrated air defense system.
Additionally, the Korea Trade Insurance Corp. entered an MOU with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company to establish a preliminary credit guarantee limit of $2 billion. Meanwhile, KEPCO KDN, a subsidiary of Korea Electric Power Corp., will join forces with Emirates Nuclear Energy Company to advance AI and digital technologies that enhance the operational capabilities of the Barakah nuclear power plant.
Continuing Diplomatic Efforts
Following the roundtable discussions, President Lee is scheduled to meet with South Korean service members stationed in the UAE, further illustrating the depth of bilateral relations. His visit will conclude with a trip to Cairo for summit talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, marking the second destination during his four-nation tour of the Middle East and Africa, which includes participation in the Group of 20 summit in South Africa and a stopover in Turkey.
By promoting collaborative initiatives within the realms of energy, defense, and advanced technology, President Lee aims to formulate a robust framework for the future of South Korea-UAE relations.
