Chart-topping K-pop group NewJeans announced their decision to sever ties with their agency, Ador—a subsidiary of Hybe Corporation—citing allegations of mistreatment, manipulation, and workplace harassment. The news was revealed during a late-night press conference on Thursday, sparking heated debates within the industry and among fans.
Allegations of Workplace Harassment and Manipulation
The group’s member Hanni detailed allegations of workplace harassment, deliberate miscommunication, and unfair treatment, both towards the band and their staff. She stated that remaining with Ador under such circumstances would only harm the group. Another member, Haerin, accused the company of undermining their efforts and criticized the possibility of being held financially responsible for contract termination, saying, “We did nothing but try our best—they are the ones at fault.”
Ador’s Defense
Ador has refuted the claims, asserting that it has not violated its contractual obligations. The agency emphasized that unilateral claims of broken trust do not justify terminating the contract and urged NewJeans to continue their activities under their current agreement, which is set to run until 2029.
In a statement, Ador also expressed regret over the press conference, suggesting it lacked adequate consideration and took place before a formal response to the group’s legal notice. They further highlighted repeated unsuccessful attempts to arrange meetings with the band members.
Min Hee-Jin’s Departure and Controversy
This conflict follows a year of turbulence within the group’s management. Former producer Min Hee-Jin, who played a pivotal role in NewJeans’ creation, left Ador in August amid accusations of planning to make NewJeans independent from Hybe. Min denied these claims but has been a central figure in the group’s ongoing feud with Hybe.
The group has openly voiced their wish to reunite with Min, underscoring the lack of trust in Ador’s management. They have also accused Hybe of attempting to replicate NewJeans’ success by launching a competing girl group, Illit.
Legal and Financial Stakes
In a legal notice sent to Ador on November 13, NewJeans demanded resolution of contract breaches within 14 days, warning that failure to comply would result in termination. However, Ador has disputed these claims, signaling a likely legal battle.
Industry analysts suggest the group may face a hefty contract breach fee of approximately 300 billion won (£170 million) if the court rules against them. Meanwhile, Hybe’s shares fell by 4% following the announcement.
Impact on K-Pop and Fans
NewJeans debuted in 2022 and quickly rose to prominence with hits like “Super Shy” and “OMG,” becoming one of Hybe’s most successful acts after BTS. The band’s popularity, combined with the serious nature of the allegations, has intensified scrutiny on artist welfare in K-pop.
This case adds to broader concerns in the industry about workplace harassment and the power dynamics between agencies and artists. As the dispute unfolds, fans and industry insiders alike are left questioning the future of one of K-pop’s brightest stars.
