Players Accuse Grand Slams of Ignoring Concerns as Tensions Intensify at French Open
A growing rift between professional tennis players and Grand Slam organizers over revenue sharing has reached a boiling point at the French Open. Novak Djokovic has cautioned that the sport risks further fragmentation as top players demand a more significant role in shaping its future.
Discontent Among Players
Several players limited their appearances at the traditional pre-tournament media day to just 15 minutes, opting out of additional multimedia interviews. The tensions, which have been escalating for weeks, became more pronounced in Paris. Taylor Fritz emphasized that the players’ concerns extend beyond mere financial gain. He stated, “It’s about just wanting what’s fair,” highlighting the need for revenue sharing that reflects the increasing profits of tournaments.
Players have voiced frustrations regarding various issues, including pensions, tournament expansion, scheduling conflicts, and late-night finishes. Many have criticized what they perceive as a lack of communication from tournament organizers.
Disconnect Between Players and Leadership
Andrey Rublev described a widening disconnect between players and the sport’s leadership. He remarked on the challenges of communication, stating, “When you try to communicate for so many years… they don’t hear you. They don’t answer.” Rublev emphasized that the issues at hand are not solely financial but also structural, indicating a need for collective action to grow the sport.
World number one Aryna Sabalenka framed the debate as a struggle for the sport’s lesser-known players rather than just the elite. She expressed her commitment to advocate for those lower in the rankings, stating, “It’s not about me. It’s about the players who are lower in the ranking, who are suffering.”
Cautious Approach to Boycott
Despite the mounting frustrations, players have adopted a cautious stance regarding the possibility of a boycott, which Sabalenka had previously suggested. Fritz noted the gravity of such a decision, saying, “I don’t know if I want to start throwing around the ‘B’ word. It’s a really big deal, and I don’t think we as players should really make big threats like that unless we’re fully ready to do it.”
Iga Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, also refrained from endorsing drastic measures. She stated, “I don’t think doing something that is not constructive will make sense,” while expressing a desire to push for necessary changes.
Djokovic’s Call for Unity
Djokovic, while not directly involved in the planned media action, aligned himself with the broader concerns of the players. He warned against further division within the sport, emphasizing the importance of advocating for all players, not just the top tier. He remarked on the small number of individuals who can sustain themselves through tennis, calling for greater unity among governing bodies, tournaments, and players.
He pointed to the fragmentation within the sport as detrimental, stating, “So the further fragmentation is really hurting me personally. I really don’t like to see that.” Djokovic also referenced the divisions in golf caused by the emergence of LIV Golf, urging tennis to learn from those developments.
Revenue Distribution Disparities
While ATP and WTA events typically redistribute around 22 percent of their revenues to players, Grand Slam tournaments are estimated to return closer to 15 percent. This disparity has become a focal point of contention. French Open organizers argue that tournament profits support entire national tennis ecosystems, not just prize money.
Discussions regarding revenue sharing and player representation are ongoing, with tournament organizers expected to meet with player agents. Amelie Mauresmo, the tournament director, expressed regret over the limited media access, stating, “It’s always regrettable because media day is an important moment for the tournament, for journalists who come from all over the world and also for the fans through the media coverage.” She acknowledged the players’ concerns but emphasized the importance of dialogue.
