UAE Developers Embrace Football Clubs for Strategic Growth
A New Era of Partnerships
In a significant move for the luxury real estate market, several UAE developers are forming partnerships with prominent football clubs. “At Ohana, we are committed to crafting bespoke, world-class developments that blend elegance and exclusivity,” stated Husein Salem, chief executive of Ohana Development. This assertion echoes the sentiment that luxury living can foster a sense of community, similar to how football clubs unite their supporters.
Ohana announced its partnership with West Ham United in 2024, aspiring to enhance the standards of luxury living through this collaboration. However, the relationship between high-end property development and football loyalties remains uncertain, raising questions about the impact of such partnerships on consumer behavior.
The Chelsea Connection
Following a similar route, Chelsea Football Club launched a partnership with Damac. Jason Gannon, the club’s president and chief operating officer, expressed enthusiasm about “bringing Chelsea to life in Dubai.” The strategy appears aimed at appealing to fans and potential property buyers alike. However, gauging how many West Ham fans have relocated to the Gulf or determining whether Chelsea supporters are investing in the Chelsea Residences has proven challenging. With Chelsea’s global fanbase reportedly reaching 140 million, Damac’s goal was modest, requiring only 1,400 interested buyers to realize a successful sellout of their Dubai development.
Expanding Collaborative Ventures
Ohana and Damac are not alone in this strategy. Other real estate developers in the UAE are also forming ties with football clubs. Sobha has aligned with Arsenal, while LEOS Developments sponsors Bournemouth. Additionally, Prestige One Developments has taken a different approach by partnering with Argentina’s national team.
At the beginning of January, Beyond Developments announced a sleeve sponsorship deal with Paris Saint-Germain, valid until 2029. These collaborations are not only about branding; they also reinforce connections between local cultural elements and global sporting icons. Aldar’s sponsorship of Manchester City further underscores this alignment, mirroring the club’s Abu Dhabi ownership.
The Rationale Behind Football Partnerships
Experts assert that these partnerships serve dual purposes. Simon Chadwick, a professor of sport, noted that football clubs attract millions of viewers globally each week. “It’s a brand awareness exercise,” he explained, highlighting how engaging with football allows developers to reach high-net-worth individuals involved in the sport.
As clubs expand their global impact, developers aim to tap into the emotional bond that fans have with their teams. This emotional connection potentially allows for higher engagement, even among individuals who may not actively participate as fans. The hope is that some of football’s allure translates into consumer interest in real estate ventures.
The Challenge of Loyalty
However, the loyalty of football fans can complicate matters. Many supporters exhibit a fierce allegiance to their clubs, making them resistant to endorsing rival brands. Historical examples, such as Rangers’ sponsorship of McEwan’s lager, illustrate the depth of tribalism within the sport. Fans often associate their purchases with team affiliations, meaning a Chelsea-supporting buyer might be less inclined to invest in a property endorsed by a rival club.
CEO of CLV Group, Neil Joyce, emphasized this point, stating, “There’s 100 percent that level of tribalism and potential off-shooting of the tribalism of sports fans.” Developers face the challenge of appealing to broader audiences while navigating the complex loyalties of football supporters.
Football’s Allure in Real Estate
Despite these challenges, the appeal of football remains potent. Developers seek to harness the dreams of trophies, belonging, and escape that football evokes. Most fans may never live in a Chelsea-branded or West Ham-endorsed property, yet the allure of the sport remains a compelling marketing tool.
In today’s landscape, where analytics play a key role in strategy, developers see value in creating offerings tied to prestigious brands. Even if the football connection doesn’t resonate universally, the potential to attract interest from affluent buyers is a critical motivator for these ventures.
