Ahmad Skaik Set for Pro Debut in Lisbon
Emerging Pro Golfer from UAE
Ahmad Skaik, a talented 28-year-old left-handed golfer from the UAE, is gearing up for his professional debut at the PGA Aroeira Challenge in Lisbon. Despite the significance of this milestone, Skaik states he will not feel additional pressure as he embarks on his professional career.
Transitioning from Amateur to Professional
Skaik made the decision to turn professional after finishing 13th at the prestigious Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship last month. This tournament is recognized as the largest amateur event in the region, which awards its champion, Fifa Laopakdee, spots at both the Masters and the Open.
Skaik’s performance was particularly commendable, as he fell out of the top ten only during the final stages of the event, demonstrating his promise among a strong field. This success solidified his long-held goal of playing golf professionally.
Representing the UAE on the Global Stage
Historically, professional golfing has not been a prominent pursuit among Emirati players. Ahmed Al Musharrek, the first Emirati to pursue a pro career, faced challenges in making a mark on the sport. Skaik, however, has been viewed as a leader on the UAE national team, often referred to by his teammates as “captain.”
Now, as he transitions to the professional arena, he carries the hopes and expectations of his country, beginning with his appearance in Portugal.
“I’ve felt it my whole life, so it’s not any added pressure,” Skaik explained regarding his role as a representative of the UAE. “I just play my game. At the end of the day, I’m just playing for myself first of all. On the course, I just think about the next shot. Everything that comes outside is just a bonus.”
Competing on the Mena Golf Tour
The tournament in Lisbon marks the beginning of Skaik’s participation in the Mena Golf Tour, which includes a total of 12 events this season. The tour features a combined prize fund of $100,000 and offers official World Golf Ranking points.
Over its 14-year history, the Mena Golf Tour has produced numerous winners on the DP World Tour, including notable players such as Robert McIntyre and Thriston Lawrence. The diverse schedule that spans across the Middle East and North Africa, along with events in Europe, provides an excellent platform for emerging talents like Skaik.
“[The tour] provides more tournaments for us to play, to compete, especially around our area. I’m very excited for that,” Skaik stated.
Aiming for Further Success
In addition to his pro debut, Skaik is preparing for the final stage of the Asian Tour Qualifying School, where his goal is to secure a top 35 finish to earn his Tour card. He expressed hopes of clinching a win or two before this pivotal challenge.
“I always wanted to turn pro, but I just waited for the Asian Pacific. Obviously, that performance gave me the answer that I’m ready to turn pro,” he commented. “I’ve had a pretty good season. I’ve had some good finishes and a good win. My game, I feel like it’s coming together. It’s good to turn pro and have this as my first event.”
Skaik’s transition from amateur status to professional golfer illustrates his dedication to the sport and sets a precedent for future Emirati golfers looking to make their mark on the international stage.
